Taking Handle off of Vietnam Tomahawk

I have a Vietnam Tomahawk from the American Tomahawk Company. It utilizes their very nice synthetic handle. I'm considering taking the head off and polishing it up.

It appears that you can unscrew the bolt on the top and remove the handle. Has anyone done this? How hard is it to get back on?

If it is not designed to be removed and re-installed I think I'll just leave things as is.

Thanks

I dont think its designed to come off easy. I think its put on under pressure...

they put it on with hydraulic pressure, unless something's changed.

if you get it off, have fun putting it back on, brother.

I checked some of your photos, and it would seem you have managed to get a VT hawk head off, how much room is there to work with in the eye. (no i havn't seen one in person :) )

i am sorry to say, they are inconsistent, brother.

we sort of "grow" the handles onto the hawks, so there are no pre-stressed areas in the handle - ya can't do that with (pure) wood or metal handles, so that's not a problem for us to make it strong - we just want to keep it as light as possible. - therein lies the challenge, plus we throw balance into the equation, which is nearly impossible to do with homogeneous handle materials, while relatively easy with composites....

brother 7.62 shooter had good luck putting a wooden handle on one of his - maybe i oughtta shut up and point ya at him - har!

that's also why we give the Happiness Guarantee - if you break it, you were either doing something extremely stupid, or were in an odd situation - we want to hear the story regardless - har! we consider ourselves a service - we just keep a hawk in your hands....

anyways, i am talking too much about the things i love, as usual...;

personally, i think the VN hawk was not a good design for a wood handle, due to the eye juncture, without some serious flips and twists in the build stage.

i guess they did it though.

the VNs were also too massive IMHO as a trained combatant - the early VTACs were lighter from what i have seen, i like them a lot more, especially oin a 24-inch handle, that can make use of the Impulse over the Inertia.

i think they average about 1/2" inch by 3/4" inches, give or take 1/8".

again, my experience is limited, ...but every one of the ATC VTACs i have held out of the handle, has varied significantly (to me at least) in mass, balance, and eye dimensions - they are all excellent, but they are also all different. - maybe that has changed with the new ones.

all my hawks get looked at under a magnifying glass, weighed by the gram, Centers of Mass noted, etc. - they are individuals to the last.

there are many ways to put a hawk together, this way is mine. :D

i figger if i am gonna fight with it, or depend on it in the wild, i don't want to doubt it.

been there, done that, the handle failed, so i went into the Hawk Biz....

rant off - going to bed to work off this flu my daughter gave me....
