My Dad said he wanted me to clear out some brush so he could see down the road better when he is pulling out of his driveway. Sounded like fun to me! Would using a chainsaw have been easier? Probably. Would using a chainsaw have been as much fun as a B11? NO WAY!

I went to go hog hunting but didn't see any hogs. I did manage to thin the moccasin population down at our swamp land.

The first victim.

The second.

And the third. I came about a foot away from stepping on this guy.

This little guy was just chilling out.

Nice. I have a question that you may think is stupid but I don't know. Is a Moccasin venomous? I'm Canadian, we just don't have those things here. The odd rattler that's it.

Yes indeed - the ONLY venomous water snake in North America... They are also called CottonMouths and pretty aggressive.

I am curious as to how you got close enough to those snakes to off them with your knife without being bitten.

Ahhh.... Cottonmouth, yeah I've heard of them. Doesn't it freak you guys out. I mean how do you let your kids go in the backyard and play with these things around. I'd nervous as hell every time I walked into the bush.

roughneckrob, TrailWolf is correct it is venomous. on_the_edge, I had enough reach with the B11 that I was able to just whack him as he was moving. I had to use a stick to pin the last 2 with the squatch.

We are pretty lucky up in the Catskills as we don't have cottonmouths... just copperheads and timber rattlers :D

Honestly though, I worry more about getting hit by a car or bus here in NYC than any animals upstate by far...

And when upstate, I worry more about my dogs than my family - we know the areas to be cautious in - the pups do not.

.

roughneckrob, it just becomes second nature to watch where you step when you grow up around snakes. Here is the third one right before I got him. By the way he is looking at me I'm pretty sure he would have popped me if I had taken another step.

And Chuck Norris would already have a sheath made. But for us mortals that is freakin awesome. Thanks for sharing. Never a good feeling to have come so close to being tagged

Well, copperheads like water and are usually found new bodies of water. Cottenmouths do not actually live in the water so I think you can classify them in the same group.
The other two venomous snakes in North America is the coral snake and the rattle snake.

They are both vipers, but cottonmouths are known fish-eaters, where copperheads are not.

I would disagree that copperheads are usually found by water - they like rocky outcrops, at least up here...

Again I have to agree with TrailWolf from my experience. I have ONLY seen moccasins (or cottonmouths) in/near water or swampy areas and I have seen/killed ALOT of moccasins. I have seen/killed copperheads in various locations.
