Well just on a whim I went down to guidance and signed up to take a ASVAB tomorrow.
As a guy that will be enlisting in the military I just want to know what to expect.
You guys got any tips?

If you can find a short discussion fo 3 and 4 bar linkages, that would be good to take a look at. (IE: if lever a moved to the right, name the geometric figure traced by the end point of lever c)

A quickie basic science review would be good,

Otherwise my recollection was asvab was pretty simple as far as tests go.

If i did OK your freshman year of high school you'll do OK on the ASVAB.

:D Yep,
Basically the ASVAB has multiple parts; math, science, reading, vocab (I think), automotive, electrical, and a couple more. The key is to relax and try to time yourself so that you can answer or at least read every question so you can be able to make an educated guess. Good luck and don't worry, I have taken it twice and the last score I pulled out a 96.

As far as enlisting goes during BCT you will learn a lot. Drill, rank, the position of attention, parade rest, etc. I am not enlisted or enlisting so I can't really tell you much about enlisted life.

lots of guys with short hair cuts screaming at you and calling you a maggot...oh wait thats boot camp...sorry..:)

No, at the ASVAB they'll tell you "Kid, I want you to go and sit down on that bench that says Group W .... NOW kid!!" and there'll be all kinds of mean nasty ugly looking people on the bench there. Mother rapers. Father stabbers. Father rapers! Father rapers sitting right there on the bench next to you! And they'll be mean and nasty and ugly and horrible crime-type guys sitting on the bench next to you. And the meanest, ugliest, nastiest one, the meanest father raper of them all, will come over to you and he'll be mean 'n' ugly 'n' nasty 'n' horrible and all kind of things and he'll sit down next to you and say -- oh wait that was draft induction. Sorry. :)

LMAO, you guys are good.

I took a couple practice tests online, seems pretty mickey mouse.
I'll post my scores up when I get them.

I see I'm not the only one who remembers "Alice's Restaurant".

The only question I remember from the ASVAB I took way back when was a "which of these doesn't belong" type question. I spotted the odd pic out immediately, but it wasn't until much later that I realized what it was - a single barrel carburetor in the electrical section.

My worst section was coding speed and accuracy, and even that was high enough to qualify for cryptography. Pretty easy tests.

If you can graduate high school, you have nothing to worry about. Go infantry

Don't sweat the ASVAB. Too late to do much studying now anyway. As for the rest, when I was thinking about signing up they just told me "start running and doing push-ups yesterday." That seemed like too much work so I stayed a civilian. :D

The ASVAB was pretty easy. I got a 97 with a 138 GT...Just go over fractions and basic math before hand, and if you have a basic understanding of mechanics/machinery and verbal comprehension, you'll do fine. Besides, everything's waverable in today's army anyway, so don't sweat it.

BTW, what MOS do you want to sign up for?

WOW!

I got a 94 (or 96... don't remember) with a GT of 121. I went infantry and I was put into mortars. Guess they thought I was good with numbers. I hate math :barf:

If you score high you won't have to worry about who your local recruiters are, they will be contacting you. Know what you want in life, find out what the military offers to get you towards that goal and tell the recuiter that's what you want. For example, let's say you want to become a doctor, enlist as a medic, get a BS while in and apply for the Military Academy of Health Sciences or go militaries Physician's Assistant route.

The military can get you to your goal but it's up to YOU to get yourself into that position. Get everything in writing. Read everything three times.

Be mindful that some jobs in the military require you to be stationed places you may or may not want to go.

They will also sometimes push certain jobs on you that they are trying to fill slots for.

If you don't have a set career path, then go for the best job they offer for your scores.

I could have gone PMEL, but took Crypto instead. I ended up at an EIG base, and got to travel, instead of sitting in some Comm Center changing keys all day. The USAF made me everything I am today...

Good luck.

I took it as Junior in High School with a whole bunch of people who didn't want to go to English or PE. The only hard part of the test was keeping quiet. I got in trouble for talking to my buddy next to me. Then I spent 15 minutes or so bulls***ing with the Marine recruiter.

I got a high 90s score (I think 97) with a GT of 124. I went Army MP. No regrets.

Just so you know taking the ASVAB isn't enlisting in the military. Just the first of many steps, ending when you raise your hand and take the oath. What to expect next though is, picking a service, job, and going off to MEPS. Above all else though is don't sign the contract unless everything you have been promised is in said contract. Be very careful about making what will be a big life altering step on what you consider a whim.

Took it today and it was easy as a french woman. :D
Lots of questions about cams for some bloody reason.
The only one I know I got wrong was in word knowledge and it was natal, guys shouldnt have to know the word natal just call it freaking childbirth. ;)
Pretty easy test, really liked the math part.

Yeah, as a MOS I am choosing infantry but I still have another year.
Hope to go to jump school and ranger school after I have a few years under my belt, but we will see.

I was interested to see who was taking it, alot of them were some of the best looking girls in my school.
Some of them only came to say the weren't going to take it after they had signed up for it.
Still though, pretty girls expressing intrest in the military, and they were no desert foxes.
