hello,

had a cheap khukri years ago and traded it off.

now i'm looking at getting a -real- one for camping/BOB use.

looking at the khukri as a compromise between my hatchet and machete, attributes of each with no real loss and only one tool to carry.

considering the British Army Service.

anyone have suggestions for a better model?
field experiences?
am i totally off base? :)

thanks for your time.

15-16" pen knife, cak, ak or bgrs

im sure others will chime on with more details... :) im at work lol.

Welcome to HI forums :D

I think the first step is to determine what you need the khukri for, with that in mind you can select the size you want. You will also have to chose the type of blade you need: slim blade or large chopping blade?

Second step: do like the rest of us and check the DOTD (deals of the day) where Yangdu post some specials for the members, villagers and blems (that are esthetic most of the time rather than functionnal). Wait for the Khukri that will answer your need, or buy anyone you like
You can get a great khuk for around 75$ in DOTDs

Repeat steps one and two.

it's mostly going to be for trail/site clearing and shelter type work.

i wouldn't mind a villager. heck, i don't care if it's got hammer marks and forge black still on it. HI means quality from all i've been able to read.

I only have one khukri yet, but what I've been told is that if it is to carry with you, like for hiking, you should go in the 15-16" range.

For the blade type, I'll second Jai:
Pen knife
Ang Khola or Chiruwa Ang Khola (Chiruwa = full tang, look the handles)
Ganga Ram

Look the Himalayan Imports website and past DOTD (search engine:threads started by Yangdu in this forum) and make your choice, then wait for your perfect deal and ATTACK (better be fast, a lot of sharks around here).

From what you have described a 15-16" ang khola, ganga ram, British army service, pen knife and balance will all serve well for your intended purpose.

A 16" ganga ram would be my personal choice out of all listed above.

I have several villagers. They have their own style, and the blades, aside from having a brushed rather than polished surface, are just as good as the others.

I prefer their horn handles and white metal fittings. Their blades usually come sharper, as well.

I would suggest one of the villager models in a 15-16" length. They are heavy enough to chop, light enough to carry. And, they are less expensive than their fancier brethren.

Good luck!

Andy

I would go with a 15" AK or BAS as a starter

depending on how big a dude ya are, you could prolly go up to a 18"AK

My preference is the 16.5" WWII. Uncle Bill always said it was the most popular khuk, especially for first timers. It certainly was one of my first. I treated it most badly: added a couple of rings to the handle, treated the wood with 15-16 coats of Tru-oil. Sweet little thing. Still my first choice for light chopping around the yard.

whew.... caught up a bit on the forums :) now back to this thread.

hmmm lots and lots of great suggestions posted...
as suggested do some research, look back at recent DOTDs and feel free to ask more and more questions.
we are one big family here and ready to assist you ;) dont be shy.

but in a nutshell...
snag anything that grabs your attention on DOTDs :D
im sure you will be more than satisfied with any decision you make :p

happy sharking and welcome to the HI forum

as always, it depends upon how much, how big you wanna cut and how far you're going to carry the tool in the field.

Get the wwII 16.5". Great starter all around khuk. Good balance between utility & weapon (you'll never know when camping & hiking).

Welcome, Metis. I'll add my vote for the BAS and the WWII. Unless you're planning to clear a forest, either would serve you well.

Any 15" HI kukuri except for the sirupati (if you decide you want one for some reason, get a 17", to start), 16.5" WWII, 17" GRS, 18" Chitlangi.

I recently have been privileged to receive a 15" AK, and I like it the most of any AK I've seen so far.

John

For a general-purpose khuk, I think the BAS is a good choice, but I'd also take a look at a 16.5" WWII model.
