Talk me into a Military

The Military is nice but this is what you really need.

I almost pulled the trigger on the Carbon Fiber BG-42 military, maybe I still will, but the new CPM-D2 Military is looking more attractive, the lower price helps too.

Can anyone comment on how the Military compares to the old Spyderco Starmate? I have a Starmate, and is the Military more or less the same knife with a difference blade and handle shape?

The Manix has a wider blade and is slightly shorter. It is much heavier, but could probably take more abuse (not like the Millie is delicate). I like the Manix a lot (I have four) and I keep the Military in my back pocket over the Manix just because it is lighter and thinner. Both are definitely knives worth having if you like big blades.

If I had to pick just one... I suppose I'd pick the Manix, by a very small margin. But the Military is definitely the preferred EDC.

A big folder that's light, sharp, tough, great ergos, and great customer service. Just get one and you'll be hooked. Good one GronK !

i have millies in S30V & CPM D2 and the BG42 model is also on the 'must have' list
i highly recommend the D2 version - it was by far the sharpest out of the box blade i have ever received, and the G10 handle has a pretty aggresive texture - i cannot imagine loosing grip on this one for whatever reason

Ok I put the one I have through my ultimate test. Kitchen duty last night. Worked better then all my others and that is saying alot. I have one hell of alot of knives both custom and production. Cuts a steak like butter. Still a little worried about the tip but I think I will just have to pick up a spare.

Having used the knife for 10 years, recommended.
I have the Manix as well,if you are "Too tough" on your knives,I would you use the Manix.

Have EDC'd a Caly 3, Para, or CRKT 16-12LE for a while, but when I got a Military I liked the size. The handle is large enough for a regular, reverse, and ice pick grip without crowding the blade with your hand, even with gloves. The handle is also long enough to make chopping powerful. It rides in the pocket as well as the others above. For the size and price there is nothing I see lighter, easier to carry with better ergonomics, and the nested liner lock is as good as a liner lock gets IMHO. The 710 D2 is a great knife too but not as useful with gloves. Besides that big Mili handle can be used as a non-lethal weapon in your fist if you choose not to open it.

As long as you are still looking at other knives, have a look at the Benchmade
710 D2. It is very well made, uses an AXIS lock, and the blade is nearly 4 inches long.

Just got me a benchmade 710. Not entirely convinced that d2 is the steel for me though, but cant decide until those diamond sharpeners arrive.

Ive been using it as a utility knife slicing fiberglass insulation and vapor barrier against an gritty unfinished floor, and cutting drywall (so what? I was out of olfa blades! Besides, I dont buy expensive knives to baby them) It didnt take long for the mighty d2 to dull, and its breaking my balls trying to resharpen this thing with conventional stones.

I carried one in the Army for a while but that large piece of liner real estate visible in the over generous cutout made me nervous. I didn't want it to "unlock" when using it in a tense situation. I sold it and bought a Sebenza instead – now that one is a keeper!
