Talk me out of a CS Recon 1

Get a recon 1, you will be glad you did. The only thing that I may choose over it in a similar price and size range would be an endura. I think the recon 1 (clip point blade especially) is an ideal tactical/large edc blade. Its super tough, excellent ergos, very grippy g10 and of course the tri-ad. If only they made one with a supersteel...

Here's the difference between Recon 1 and Endura lockup and internals....

Check out the difference between the lockups. The Endura looks positively frail compared to the Recon 1's Triad lock.

Noticeable blade play in the Endura would worry me a bit, while if the Recon 1 developed blade play I would still be confident my fingers were quite safe. I measured it, and there was about 1 mm of contact between the Endura's lock bar and blade, while the Recon 1 had about 5 mm with that huge stop pin as well...

The Recon 1's pivot pin is much larger in diameter.

Also I noticed this difference in the part of the backspacers holding the spring in place, the Recon 1 has a metal pin, while the Endura relies on FRN protrusions. Interesting, although I assume either method is adequate here.

I paid $58 delivered recently for an Endura and $53 for a Delica. I would do this all day over Cold Steel offerings. In the same price range, I would also take a Tenacious. They are tremendous budget knives. Everyone has their .02 but I feel like Cold Steel is pretty well beneath these suggestions in quality.

The endura is a knife that i dislike and borderline hate. Way too much blade play, just all around flimsy and weak. Would be great for skinning animals or food prep great slicer, like vg10, but absolutely not a hard use knife. There are crazy sales on cold steel folders on ebay right now. Plain edge recon 1 $43 for clip point and $38 for a partial serrated. Hold out II $35. I don't know what's going on there but if i had money would be buying more. Buy them while their there.

I have carried one form or another of the Delica series since the 90s. No knife since has been more of a fav than the Delica. The cold steel that I just got today is my second knife from them. I really like it but you really can't compare the two knives just because they are in the same price point. The knives have 2 totally different purposes. The Recon 1 is just a big old beast that you can beat the hell out of and not worry about the lock. I really don't consider it an EDC knife for myself, but more of something i would carry for a specific purpose such as a trip to the woods, without a fixed blade. The Delica on the other hand is my EDC of choice. Does many things well but could never hard use it like you could the Recon 1. I just don't feel it is a fair comparison between the Delia/Endure and the Recon just because they have similar price tags.

The reason I opted out of the Spyderco Endura/Delica was because they're more EDC blades. I've already got a 940 Osbourne which covers that use perfectly, and I love it! I also have got a Spyderco Dragonfly 2 and while I don't mind the FRN on that size knife, I'm not sure I would love it on a bigger blade. I *do* know that both those knives are insanely popular though, so I may pick one or the other up at some point and see what all the fuss is about.

The only other big folders I own (besides ZT) that come to mind as being comparable to my Recon 1 are the Boker Plus AK 101 and the CRKT Hammond Cruiser. The AK's liner lock is not in the same league, though, and I'm sure some people will prefer the Recon's AUS8A to 440C. Still, I'd be lying if I didn't admit to liking my AK more than my Recon 1. As far the the Cruiser, it does have an admittedly lesser steel, but I am quite impressed by the locking mechanism and the Zytel handle. The AK costs almost as much as the Recon 1 and is also made in Taiwan, while the Cruiser is considerably cheaper but made in China.

The tri ad lock is amazing, If you like the cold steel look then go for it.
I love the AK 47 due to the blade shape myself.

Well here she is!

I'm really happy with it, especially for 45 bucks. It locks up real tight. I only have two minor issues. First is that it's not a really fast deploying knife. Maybe this will get better over time. The other is that you really need to push at the triad lock to release the blade. Not a huge problem considering how tight it locks up.

It will get smoother, great choice. They are high quality tools built for the long haul.

You can thumbflick the blade but it takes effort espeically if you have the pivet screw really tight like i do on mine. Just loosen the pivet screw if you want to deploy the blade out with less resistance.
