Talk me out of buying a Ronin

I carry a Calypso Jr. or Salt most days, sometimes mixing in a couple others to keep things interesting. Lately I've been eying a Ronin as a good EDC. I like the idea of carrying a fixed blade. Should I take the plunge?

It's discontinued, so if you don't get one now, it's not going to get any easier. It's one heck of a nice knife too, you won't regret buying one.

I've been on a fixed blad kick as of late and have been meaning to get one. I say go for it.

Sorry there is no way I could talk you out of owning the fixed blade Yojimbo known as the Ronin. I own ten of them myself.:o

It is sharp, easy to maintain, and well made. Since it is a fixed blade, you can't possibly suffer any of the real or perceived lock issues, that some find with folding knives.

Ronins are made of poo. Girls will hate you if you own a Ronin.
Nah- can't go on like that- it's a fine blade! Go For It!

If I had an extra $100 in my pocket, I'd get one in a blink of an eye. Don't miss out on this one.

It looks like a really cool, well made knife. I "almost" bought it myself about ten times when it was being discontinued on the Spyderco website. I just couldn't imagine myself ever using it. And trust me, it doesn't take much to convince myself I need a new knife. I like folders for EDC, and if I needed a fixed blade, this just didn't seem like it would meet those needs. I have a yojimbo which is great. If I got a really great deal on a Ronin I might get it as a collectible.

Well you guys are a lot of help. I can't say I've got an extra $100 laying around but if it's being discontinued, I guess I'm obligated. All of my favorite Spydies are discontinued, so that must be a sign.

In about a five-minute span, I just went from thinking about buying a Ronin and leaning against it, to leaning heavily towards buying two. I guess that's what I can expect posting on a knife forum.

That's like asking an alcoholic if you should buy some beer;)

Of course we're going to tell you to buy it:cool:

Well it's really the answer I wanted, so I'm not too bent outta shape.

The Ronin is a wicked SD matter seperator. I like it a lot. It's not a prybar but acts more like a lightsaber. :D

First, let me say that the Ronin is a terrific knife.

Now, I need to ask, have you ever carried a fixed-blade as an EDC?

If the answer is "no", then yes, you must buy it and carry it and experience a fixed-blade EDC for yourself.
Because only then will you know if fixed-blades are the EDC for you.

Over the years, I have tried to EDC alot of different fixed-blades, but I have now come to accept that I am a "folder man".

Good luck,
Allen.

These sorts of threads puzzle me. If you like a knife and can afford it, buy it. If you either do not like a knife or cannot afford it, don't buy it. Why come and ask us to talk you into/out of buying a given knife? We are not you and do not know your tastes, needs, and economic condition.

It's thin and specialized and not very useful, IMO. Buy it only if you inner mall ninja cannot be satisfied any other way.

How'd that work?

It was more of a silly way to say "tell me your impressions of this knife." I just wanted to hear some feedback about it.

Well I pulled the trigger on 2 old style Ronins on ebay just now. I liked the look of the old sheath a bit better than the new one. Does anybody know if all of the old style Ronins were numbered? It doesn't matter too much either way, but I'm guessing the numbered ones might maintain a better value. I probably won't sell either of them, but I like the way my numbered Shabaria looks so I'm just curious.

And thanks everybody for the feedback. I'll be eager to get them and see how they are IRL.

Only criticism is that the blade steel is a little on the thin side. But if you consider that this is NOT a utility knife then that shouldn't really matter.

I was always fascinated by the look and the "designed by M Janich" by-line, so when they were discontinued, i just couldn't resist :)

Get one you will not be disappointed. Yes it is thin. It is a last ditch edged weapon, and boy does it penetrate. The tip is so this and so sharp i wonder if the BG would even know he had been stuck. and yes the early Ronins are numbered I have 502.
