Talk to me about the SAR5

I had one and did not like the handle. I also felt like it was only a matter of time before I cut myself on it. So I sold it.

I like this one much better.

I like mine (OD/Orange) It's a great all-around knife. Underrated IMO. The scales are a bit fat in the hand but do provide for a strong grip.

GOT ONE USED--

EDGE HAS BEEN CONVEXED FROM ORIGINAL OWNER

SPENT 15 MINUTES SANDING DOWN THE GRIP TO MY LIKING

GREAT MID SIZE KNIFE----

KEEP YOURS BRO

CONVEX THE EDGE

SAR 5 may be my favorite user busse. It goes everywhere my Fatboy goes... which is everywhere I go. The lack of choil really makes it special. It has the same cutting edge length as the Batac in a much more compact package. I did some minor alterations to mine, including stripping, sanding down the micarta and taking some steel off the butt. Now it is juuuuuuuuuuuust right! I may decide to go ahead and convex it like the good Doc did above. And maybe a bit more sanding on the micarta... and .... whatever else I can think of after a couple beers....

I really wanted one till I got one...........then I traded it. It did not feel right to me, the ass end of the grip was just to damn big. I dont have small hands mind you, but it felt big. I liked the looks of the blade and grip, it just did not fit me well. I wished it did, I would have made it my daily user. I thought about taking the scales off and grinding them to about hlf the thckness, but in the end I traded it for a battle rat.

Just keep it Jon. If you sell it, eventually you'll want one again.

I've only got three of them - Black + Orange & Black G-10, Sage + Tan Canvas Micarta & variation 6 (1 of 2) White + Black G-10. I really should have completed the set.
When will I learn.

I have always liked the SAR 5 and it has replaced all my others as my "camp" knife.

It is a great all around knife. It is small and has about as much edge as a Ash or sfno.

Ducci worked on the slabs on mine and it feels great now.

The only issue with this knife is its total lack of any kind of guard. The edge should have ended about 1/4 inch from the handle like that knife James61 had posted.

.

What knife is that?

Tony,

"That" appears (Almost possitive) to be a Bill Siegle SAR-4.

River-8 (one of the SAR guys) designed it (apparently along with some other SAR regulars from around here: Quote from River-8: "The design is a collaborative effort, including Dunner, 360Joules and others." ..... and had Bill make it for him (them ????).

The one posted above appears to be a full height grind version of the original saber grind version.

See Swamp Rat's "Koffee Klatch post from October:

I am another who is a big fan of the Busse SAR5, but another who would (will eventually) tweak the handle. I have large hands and I also feel the handle is larger/heavier than I prefer.

But, honestly, I prefer the Siegle even more. I really like the more spear point design and the apparent lack of need of any modifications (Already SATIN too!!! ). The Siegle/River-8 SAR4 has been on my wish list since I saw it...... Even though I don't know the cost or even availability. I just need to recoup finances from all the recent HIGH dollar Busse costs: NMFBM, NMSFNO, SFNOLE's, Skinny ASH, Ganza FSH, etc... etc...

----------------

I went back to read over the post again on Swamp Rat and noticed the picture at the top of the post shows "2" of Bill Siegle's SAR4. From the pic, the top one appears to be full height grind and the one a little lower and to the left appears to be the saber grind (?????) - I guess the top one might be James 61's (?????)

Yeah, I already decided, after picking it up to photograph it for sale.... that I just need to keep it. I went and ordered and LH Mashed Cat... so she's gonna be my second "user", after the BAD. I really like the feel of the SAR... I'd love one in a 4" with a tiny bit thinner handle too though!

Just hang in a little longer. The SAR4 is still a-comin'.

So sayeth the Boss.:D

[I've got 3 or 4 of the 5's myself ...]

Nice SAR5 Tony.

To confirm what DWRW said.

Yes my knife is a Siegle that was made on input form River 8. Billmade two prototypes. One is flat ground and the other is sabre. Also there were some slight differences in handle shapes. Bill let a bunch of us play around with them during on of the Koffee Klatches. Based on our input he then made a third prototype. I don't know what the status of the third design is. I'm asuming River 8 has it. Bill or John will have to drop in and confirm. The other two Bill sold. I bought the flat ground becasuse the smaller handle fit my hand better. Rescue Mike has the sabre ground.

That SAR5 is the first Busse knife that I've seen that I would really like to get ahold of.

James,

If you have any further update on the 3rd proto, please post it or PM me if more appropriate.

Or maybe, like you said, Bill or John can update us (me ;) )

I have pretty large hands, but I do like handles somewhat appropriately sized. Considering the blades size, the handles do look pretty big. - Although, much easier to make handles smaller than to make them larger. ;)

I generally like a full height flat grind, but I honestly prefer the saber grind on this one.

I am curious what Jerry has in mind for the SAR4.

I had one with black blade and green G10 and I sold it several months ago to get a comp edge SJ. The SJ is a nice knife, but I really regret getting rid of the SAR5.

My single complaint with that knife was that the scales were about 1/8" too wide for me. If I had had someone grind them down, the SAR5 might be competing with the Ratmandu for my favorite blade of all time. The scales look great on that one Tony, please post a spine pic so we can see the width.
