Talkin' Turkey

Turkeys live and nest in the woods just behind my house.

Looks like a great place!!

I really cant get there this weekend, but next weekend is good for me :D :D

Well... I got my arse whupped by the hunting gods YET AGAIN.:mad::grumpy:

I was in the right place (mostly) all three mornings. Friday morning, heard some good gobbling on the roost. Heard his fly down, and saw one hen fly down close by him. He started gobbling and heading away from me, so I figured he was done. BUT... for some reason, he decided to come in to my desperation calls. Sadly, he hung up about 100 yards away and just strutted back and forth.

Saturday morning, I set up on a tree that was better for where I thought him roosted. Problem was, when he gobbled that first gobble of the morning... he was only about 30 yards due East of me. Way too close... had to have heard me come in and/or saw me. Only gobbled twice, (scared the crap out of me on the first one!) and pitched off and hit the ground at a fast walk away from me... and directly towards my hunting partner. Ol' Tom managed to skunk him too, thanks to one of his gals tagging along. That day was very windy, didn't hear a single gobble the rest of the day.

Sunday morning, set up again in a good place. Would have been perfect except for two little issues: I fell on the way in, (there went the element of surprise) and Ol' Tom happened to be roosting with 4 hens. I watched all five hit the ground and make like they had something really important to do in the opposite direction of me. Yet another windy day, never heard another gobble all day. And strangely... I busted a Tom who was in a tree in the late morning when I got up to change my location!

I think we hit the worst time... the hens seemed to be actively breeding, and they kept Ol' Tom busy. The Toms seemed to hen up and go quiet. The windy conditions did not help either. No responses at all to a little running and gunning. No movement seen at known previous ambush points. Not even any strutting seen at known strutting zones. I have NO clue why this year sucked again.

There is a happy ending for at least my hunting partner though... he called me this morning and told me he got a Tom on the last day of the season. He didn't get Ol' Tom, my nemesis from the past weekend... though he had him roosted. OT henned up and ghosted away like usual. The tom that my buddy got was a subordinate who came in text book fashion. Ended up being an exciting and successful hunt for him at least. Me? just call me "vegetarian"... that's an old Native American word for poor hunter. ;):D
