Talon sheath tightness

I know this has been covered before, but what I'm not clear on is what is considered "acceptable" as far as tightness is concerned with the Talon sheath?

I know there isn't much for the sheath to "grab" on the handle of the knife (in my case, a talonite talon), so I don't expect it to necessarily "lock" in. There seems to be some friction against the handle, but a fairly light "shake" will drop the knife right out.

For those who replaced your "loose" sheath with a "new" one, can you describe the difference in retention?

I also bit the bullet and just ordered a Talonite EDC. I plan on having this knife replace my current "duty" knife that I carry in the front pocket of my body armor. I was also considering having "09-11-01" engraved on the handle. From all the good things I've heard, I can't wait to handle this blade.

Thanks, Will, I sent you an email last night.

As usual, your customer service is second to none.

I just purchased a new Talon myself and I love, I mean love the knife (no smart@$$ comments now). However, I have the exact same issue with my sheath that is expressed here. My only point in bringing this thread back up is to determine whether or not this "non-tightness" is a normal condition for the factory sheath. Just want to know whether I should try to get a different sheath from Camillus or seek a custom sheath.

Great knife, I'd highly recommend it to anyone. The sheath is very well designed also, just not very tight in holding the knife securely.

Thanks in advance for the advice/opinions.

Bruce - I have been waiting for a replacement sheath for my Talon for a while now. Will says that Blade Tech is having difficulties in maintaining consistency in tension of the sheath and are working on resolving it right now.

Thanks Dex, you da'Man! You always know what's going on in the world of sharp things. ;)

has got to be the best damn (hey, can i say damn in here, being a company forum?) fixed blade out there, production wise.

a little large (longer than AR state law allows) but it finds its way to my belt just about everyday...i wear it horizontally on my belt, right by the buckle. very comfortable and easy to acess, even with a sweater or coat on.

this is one knife i simply cannot say enough about.

I agree, the talon is The Knife for daily use. I'd like to wear mine horizontal myself but I seriously doubt it would stay in the sheath if I walked down some stairs and it inverted a little. Maybe I'm just being paranoid. Horizontal carry for a knife of this size is about ideal for quick access.

Anybody tried a Normark sheath for a talon? How tight are they?

I have received the replacement sheath a month or so ago. Although you cannot see any difference from the old one you can tell it is much better once you insert the knife. IMO they changed the opening a bit so it holds the knife better. It was impossible to carry the knife with the handle down - now I have no problems with it. The new sheath is definitely better than the old one :).

That sounds really great! When did you get your new sheath? I thought they weren't ready yet? Anybody know how to go about getting one of the new sheathes?

I'm so in the dark... ;)

I had Kenny Rowe make a "back pocket" sheath for mine. It is black leather with a metal clip. If it wasn't late and the knife wasn't out in my truck I would attach a photo. I can grab it an go when I am out, you never know when you might have to skin something.

They have been replacing the old sheaths for some time now... I asked them in January and got the sheath a few weeks later. But they may have some temporary problems now.. I don´t know.

Wanted to bump this to point out that I first asked about it on 2/8/02. Will asked me to send him an email with my shipping address, which I did immediately.

I wasn't in a hurry, so I waited until 5/23/02 before asking for an update. Will again asked me to send him an email with my shipping address, which I did immediately.

With bowhunting season rapidly approaching, I asked again on 8/15/02. Will, again, gave me an email address to send my shipping address to, which I did immediately.

Will, could we please get this taken care of? I think I've been more than patient.

Thanks.

Hey Nobody...

There are a few of my Talon sheaths out there...

As far as fit goes.. There shouldn't be a problem..My sheaths are all hand tuned before they go..There will be slight variations, but nothing drastic..I'm still a one man band here, so I can take a few minutes more on a sheath.

The sheaths I make are foldover design, and are much easier to tune than a two piece sheath. With a one piece sheath, you only have to worry about one side flexing to get the fit. With two piece sheath, you have flex on both top and bottm, and this sometimes makes it difficult to tune and get just right.

Heres a picture Rob took for me.

Hey Guys..

Forgot to add...

As far as the knife goes..

If you have one, you know exactly what I mean,, if you don't, you are missing out on one of the finest knives on the market. The Cuda Talon is one of the finest production knives I've ever seen. If you've ever wanted a Simonich but either couldn't afford or find one. This is the Absolutely closest thing you'll find.

It is easily one of my favorite knives in my collection.

Amen to that! You are soooo right Eric! They are fantastic - have a number of Rob's originals and there is not a lot of difference - Rob's are "ROB'S" but Camillus did it very right. Have 3 CUDAs: 1 standard Talonite, 1 Stag Talonite & 1 154CM - all are great! Use the st. Talonite daily for grapefruit - haven't met a grapefruit it couldn't disembowl & skin in seconds and never have to worry about taking care of the blade - touch up edge about once a month.
