Just ordered the Kershaw Talon in the plain 4" blade from the BF store. Don't know much about the knife other than the price seemed to good to pass up. Any info is appreciated. thanks and keep'em sharp.

Longbow, it is a great knife! I got one when Bladeforums first got them and paid $49.95 which I thought was a bargain. When I saw the new price a ordered another. In addition to the right hand thumb stud, this knife has a large knurled "wheel" on the end of the tang. As a lefty, I can use this to open the blade quite easily (of course it will work with either hand but there is a stud for righties). Even thought it is a large knife it is not unwieldy and is very comfortable in the hand. Lockup is solid. My only criticism, which I've posted about several times before, is the clip. In a word it sucks! Both the clip itself and its position on the knife are poor. The knife is too large for comfortable pocket carry without the assistance of a clip and this clip makes for a very poor clip assisted carry. I'm going to remove my clip and pick up a belt sheath for the knife. It is an outstanding value at $40. I also have two of the modified talons with beer bottle decapitation device that doubles as the opening assist device and have been very happy with them also. Same clip problems though and I removed mine and use a belt sheath.

phantom4,

Okay, you got me confused. I think only the Kershaw Ridge Starkeys have this 'wheel' (model 141X). As I know it the Talons are the ones with the wharncliff (?) blades (model 142X) and don't have the wheels, do they?

At any rate, I love mine too. The only complaint is that the locking liner is exposed too far out of the handle. I find it's too easy to open when I whiteknuckle it.

PS.I think the thumbstud could be removed and reinstalled on the other side of the blade with an allen wrench.

If you look at the top of the spine you will see the knurled disk he is refering to. You can use it or the stud to open the blade.

I was a bit confused when I saw this named the "Talon" in the store... I still am. Wasn't this model named the "Starkey Ridge" or "Ti-ATS34 / G10-ATS34" (worst name ever, but it says what buyers like to hear, I guess). I too thought that the "Talon" referred to Kershaw's peculiar hawksbill design. What gives? Did this name come straight from Kershaw or has there been a mistake?

And while we're talking Kershaw, do they still supply users with a hex key and spare parts with each knife, actually (gasp!) allowing users to take them apart? Or have they folded on that one like all the other companies?

Corduroy,

I think it's always a mix, depending on the model. I have two Starkey Ridges (or Ridge Starkeys? Jeez... couldn't remember) that came with hex keys. My Wild Turkey and the both the Talons don't have them. I also have two Random Tasks that don't have keys and parts, but I understand the reason behind it.

OK, forget the spare parts and hex key, do they still offer a warranty that isn't voided by disassembling the knives? I'm most curious about the Wild Turkey / Hawk series.

Corduroy and Frantium, I had the same confused reaction as you guys did. I also thought this large Talon was called the Starkey Ridge. When I ordered my first one from bladeforums I also ordered the modified Talon with the beer popper. I knew was I was getting with that one but I thought that perhaps the wrong picture was shown for the large Talon. I ordered it anyway and got just what was in the picture. I don't know if Kershaw changed the name or what.

Corduroy,

Correction: my Talons came with the keys and the parts. I checked the manual, there's an instruction for disassembling and reassembling the knife. I first thought the Talons didn't have the parts, but they were there just in the bottom of the boxes.

My Wild Wild Turkey doesn't have this. The manual doesn't mention about voiding the warranty if you disassemble the knife, nor a disassembly instruction.
