Talonite Opinions - worth the bucks????

Thanks for all the replys. I realize I took the 'quote on quote' quote out of context a little bit, but I was just looking for some imput from Rob Simonick and you guys.

Don't get me wrong, I want a knife in Talonite! I just don't know if the steel is worth the money. What does it go for, like $130 a pound? The blade of the REKAT Carnavour certainly doesn't weigh a pound, yet the price difference over the regular model is phenomenal. Does this have something to do with machining dificulties?

Any replies are welcomed, I'd like to learn more about Talonite.

I need a bigger bucket.

Stompy,

Check Rob's site again....he's just added something he calls his "Signature Series". Semi-custom with the basic prep work farmed out to reduce costs. The Talonite Cetan in both 3" and 3.5" varieties is cheaper this way.

Stompy, Talonite runs around $160 per pound. There is roughly $40 of raw material in a Carnivour size blade, add to that EDM machining due to the lock cuts, which is very expensive, increased abrasive and hand grinding and REKAT is giving a good deal on these knives with the very strong Rolling Lock! Talonite isnt for everyone for sure, and if a person likes ATS-34 then you can buy a couple of knives for the price of one Talonite. I use and like ATS-34 for some knives, but the Talonite knife will be around much much longer that an ATS-34 knife of the same design. Drop 2 identical knives of ATS-34,440-V, 440-C, etc and Talonite into a vat of salt water and forget about them for 6 months......Worth the money? For some no, for me and many other folks, yes.

I just took another look at your site, Rob, looking at the Signature Series, and some of the other Talonite blades. WOW!

Question: Will Talonite ever be available in kit form, or in the skeleton/neck knife variety, like the one Cetan on your fixed blade page?

Given some of the comments about Talonite not biting I am going to step out on a limb and ask about the dirty word "Serrations"

I know that a number of members of this forum hate serrations with a passion but they might help with the bite issue if Talonite is suitable for them.

Is Talonite suitable for serrations?

Walt should be able to answer the serration question. I completed his small U2 in Talonite and it has a partially serrated edge. I've not had any complaints on other serrated Talonite or Stellite 6K knives.
