Tan Canvas MUK - disappointed in color

I'm with ya. The color can vary from batch to batch and sheet to sheet in the same batch. We buy this stuff in huge quantities direct from three different manufacturers and consistency is not really any of their strong points. We've been told that the temperature at which it is cured can cause the variation in color. The darker ones being cured at a higher temp.

Ultimately with exposure to UV rays and heavy use it will all turn dark. Sometimes a quick scrub with acetone will lighten it and pull the oils out of it. I have seen handshaped tan canvas that after years of use will look more like a burgundy than a tan  . . . It looks pretty cool actually! ! ! !

We have looked into making our own, but the process puts out some fairly toxic fumes. Combine that with how drunk this crew is most of the time and only heaven knows what would be coming out of the doors!!!!

Hope that helps,

Jerry :D

My DABA has more of the reddish color to it. I prefer it, actually. It doesn't look bad with either. Unless you find the color ghastly or all you want to do with the knives is line them up and take "matching" pictures, I don't see how it is much of an issue.

So, basically you just want to look at the handles and not use the knives?

That's not it. He just wanted them to match. I can appreciate that and I wish we could control the look of the material so they would've matched.

I bought a pair of revolvers a few years ago and although the handles were the same material. . . they looked nothing like eachother. I bought 'em to use but it was still a bit of a bummer.

i understand the reasoning as well, I'm a bit "anal" about colors of my knives, luckily i just got a new swamp rat knife and it was tan with the right amount of red that i wanted, and darkening over time is just character IMO.. the same way scuffing up that finish will be :D

At first I thought mine had the wrong colour also, but then upon closer inspection, saw that the red-ish undertones were there.

I've always liked the darker red-ish tan micarta for my blades  , but also like the lighter batches, esp when it is hand shaped. Looks more like a wood grain to me.

Maybe you could post the "Want to Trade" section and see if anyone got one with the lighter coloured batch and would swap ya even up. Just a thought.

There ya go! ....He does it again!
How can you beat that?

Except you had better quote him on "a beer or two"

I have a Mr. Mojo that I think is supposed to be tan. Where the oil from my hands has soaked in the handle looks burgundy like Jerry mentioned. I got a Waki from the Swamp and the handle looked like almost like a bright wood (very cool). I got a SAR3 in that looked more like what is in the picture (dusty brown). All 3 were completely different. My Jack Hammer with black micarta looks green and my BWM looked grayish. No biggie to me but for set collectors I guess it would be a thing.

Hey Jerry, when guys do wood flooring they sort out the panels (opposite reason though). Maybe that's a something you can add to your offerings. Get some of the guys to go in and sort the handle materials up every now and then. Maybe too much hassle but would def be another knotch for the Busse brand. Maybe offer matched handle sets or light dark versions as a additional option or something. Would add some to the collector value I would think.

Thanks Jerry!!!! You are the man. I'll get you my info. It's not really a huge deal for me, I was just surprised I guess when the MUK was so much darker. The only tan canvas I ever had was from the Swamp and they were lighter which is what I prefer. Oh, and I am drinking! :)

Yeah, I'd have to jump on the Koolaid wagon and say thats a +1 for extreme customer service in todays world.

Jerry, my MOAB doesn't quite match my man-purse. I would like to send in the man-purse in exchange for a MOAB that matches the other. Please give me the mailing address to send it to, like the one for the Infi Vault.

Thank you.
