As a stock removal maker,I am curious how other knifemakers do the tangs of Damascus blades. With the cost being so high(rightfully so)it bothers me to cover half of it with handle.I weld O-1 on my stick tang knives now. Thanks,Dave
Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work! http://www.nebsnow.com/L6steel

I make my own damascus. If I had to buy it at about $15-$20 per inch I would weld a tang on but make sure it is in the handle far enough in case the weld is weak. If it is a full tang knife I use damascus all the way. I like the looks of a full tapered damascus tang that has been etched properly. Bruce
I buy stainless damascus from Devin Thomas and for $15 he welds on a stainless tang. Best $15 I've ever spent. He cuts, welds, anneals and surface grinds. I put the weld at mid-bolster, but frankly that weld is so clean and even I have no worry about it failing.
