Tanto Blades Suck with Example

Not trying to be a jerk but...
A. I would be majorly pissed off if I was a customer that got blood on my food. You should have given her new bananas.

B. Why use a knife to separate bananas? I get that we all like to play with our sharp things (otherwise we would not be on this site) but I have never used a knife to separate a bunch of bananas. ... when you use a knife for things they are not needed or that they should not be used on, bad things happen.

And what about the poor customer who now has your blood on her food? You absolutely should not have let her walk out with food items you sold her with your blood on them. This is customer service 101: do not contaminate products with possible blood borne pathogens. Seriously not okay.

To be fair, you don't eat banana skins. But still.

You might touch the banana skin before you eat it with your hands, right? This is basic stuff. Blood anywhere for any reason is a no go in the service and customer service industry. No excuse. He knowingly let a customer have a food item with his blood on it.

True Story 3/22/2017: I handed the customer 3 bananas off the 5 banana bunch and put them in the old woman's shopping cart, trying to make it seem as if I hadn't just rammed the point of my CS recon mini tanto blade into my index finger. We talked for about half a minute more. Right before we parted I checked her three bananas hoping no blood had gotten on them. There was a little spot of blood on one, not a full drop, so I wiped it away with my other hand. The red sort of went away and I said yep, this a good one. About twenty minutes later it stopped bleeding.

OK I will tell you why I won't buy another tanto blade. The top of the blade is longer than the bottom of the blade so it can be difficult in some situations to judge where that point is, and the cutting surface is flat so a tanto blade is like cutting with a razor blade. I've never found a good use for the vertical edge. Based on what is known from history, the tanto shape was used to puncture whatever you were trying to kill, esp when you needed to go through someone's armor. I learned tonight that it does excel in that area.

Coldsteel knives are hardcore, that thick Carpenter tool steel is extremely powerful and should not be taken lightly. It makes a VG-10 spyderco look like a child's play thing. I think for now on I'll carry the spyderco since its lighter and easier to handle, and save the cold steel for when that kind of power is truly needed.

This is another example of what journalists call 'burying the lede.'

You make it sound as though this story is about why American tanto blades are a terrible design, which is an opinion that I largely agree with.

But the story is actually about A) Why did you just ram the point of your CS Recon Mini Tanto into your index finger? and B) Why did you give a customer food that has your blood on it?

If the answer to A) was "Because I was cutting bananas off the bunch with it," why did you need a knife to do that? I'm a big fan of using tools, but tearing bananas off a bunch is not a task that requires tools. We use tools to accomplish things that we can't do or can't easily do without them. Anyone can just rip a few bananas off a bunch without a knife.

That is like using knives to cut zip ties... when you use a knife for things they are not needed or that they should not be used on, bad things happen.

A. Agreed.

B. I agree with your sentiment, but that is a poor analogy. Bananas easily come apart by hand, a zip tie not at all. I always use a knife for those and have never had a problem. Scissors work too.

Prot from K-pax eats them with the skin.

True... I edited my original post to remove the analogy. The statement stands on its own without the analogy.

This has to be a joke thread.

yep. my thoughts too. too ridiculous to be real, cutting bananas......... but then again.........

i think tantos suck when sharpening, but that about it. i hate having to precisely sharpen two separate edges. sometimes i get lazy and just sharpen both as if it was one and round off the joint.

yeah, but dude, you lean your elbow on that thing if it's left on the table and it's an ER trip for you...

I'm often temped to do just that... has it worked for you?

works fine as a knife. lose that sharp joint though over time. i don't really need it, but visually i kinda like that sharp joint appearance. as for cutting couldn't tell ya if it's needed or not. works the same either way in my experience.

It seems that over time, it might work itself out to be more like a traditional tanto... or maybe like a cqc-15.
