Tanto in Carbon Fiber and Silk

Somewhat traditional assembly using non-traditional materials

Blade Steel is W-2 ( I think that is what Chris said) and was purchased from Chris Moss (aka knifemaker87), a talented young maker. Has differential tempering and it shows a very interesting hamon. I am pleased and impressed with Chris’ work. Thanks Chris!

I hand sanded/polished/etched the blade using wet-dry sandpaper, stopping at 1500 grit.

Copper Habaki, my first attempt.

All other fittings are from brass, except for some titanium pins which are used to reinforce the black linen spacers. The thicker brass spacer is pinned in place and is removable.

Brass take down pin. Take down pin hole is lined with copper tubing.
I laid up the carbon fiber and copper colored silk laminate for the handle and saya. The spacers between the brass are black linen I laid up.

This was completely done by hand with the exception of some rough profiling in the disc grinder. The rest was done using files, sandpaper and elbow grease. I don’t even care to think about the amount of hours I have into this one. Not to mention all the sandpaper I have used.

Asking $375

Price includes shipping, paypal fees, shipping insurance. Overseas shipping will bit a bit more, but I will be happy to work with you. I will be also happy to work with other payment methods than paypal. Lets discuss it. PM, email me or post an "I'll take it" please, if you are wanting it.

13-1/4” OAL in saya
12-7/8” OAL out of saya
Blade thickness .200”
Blade Height: .810" at habaki
Blade length including habaki: 8-1/16”
Length of sharp edge: 7-1/8”
Handle length: 4-3/4”
Handle/ saya width max: 7/8”, min.:5/8”

Price drop. I really would like to move this...reasonable offers and interesting trades considered.

That is very nice, I like that a lot. Much better then just a "kydex" sheath.

Does that handle come off, or is it attached permanently?

Thank you. I had a lot of fun making it. I'd make more of them if I knew there were a market for my work:)

Pull the pin and it comes apart for inspection and cleaning. The thicker brass spacer is pinned in place with titanium pins.

fod, That is AMAZING! I really like the concept. You need to throw some more pics of this piece up. It's the first "modern" tanto that I've drooled at :>)

Thanks again. More Pics and build progress posted Here

Up for another look.

bump with price dip and few more pics

A couple more pics, the camera seems to have a problem focusing on this material.

The sheath is a very tight fit. After separating for about 1/8" it is snug, then freely drawn.

I have made no provision for attachment to a belt. I have tried to tie something up in a semi traditional way, but nothing so far that I care for.

Thanks for the interest

another amazing blade. beautiful, and I can only hope for more, later..

you likely will do very well at that quality level, I'm just boggled at the way it all comes together, 'modern' tanto indeed! Kudos!

Thanks Mitch! If I could sell one a week I'd build one a week. :D For all sorts of good reasons I am not selling all I make

Anyway, here is a couple scans (new scanner and I am playing around with it)

It works pretty good, but what ever is not flat on the glass is out of focus.

...and another look for this one too...

Wow, that IS nice. I really like what you did with it. If I had the money I'd get it for sure.

I got the tanto this morning in the mail. I am so very pleased with it. It is a beautiful knife. The craftmanship is of high quality. Thanks, John

Amazing work... I love the hamon and the sheath. I had a question on how you attached the pin. Looks like there is a tube and rod. Could you tell me what size tube and what size rod you used?

Don't thank me, Thank you! I am glad you like it. :D Warm Regards!

Thanks John,

I just returned your PM.

I used 3/16" OD brass for the pin and 3/16" ID ( with .014" wall) copper tubing

It was a PITA, but worth it, I think.

Thanks for the interest and the kind words!
