Tanto versus Tanto

As my Spyderco collection grows I am becoming very particularly fond of the Spyderco C-46 Bob Lum Tanto folder. I also love the Spyderco FB-08 Lum Tanto fixed blade. Bob Lum's tanto design just seems years ahead of most conventional Tantos particular the ones that one competitor in particular offers.

I have one USER C-46 Lum Tanto folder that I dearly adore. I even have mastered sharpening the Lum tanto blade and I find it much more practical and functional than I do there more standard/conventional tanto designs.

I hope a few of you agree with me on that :) And I am hoping that there will be more Bob Lum stuff in the Spyderco line up in the near future. If you all agree with me then tell me why? Or if you disagree with me I'd like to know why also?

Hi JD,

I have a couple of the Lum tantos also, the fixed blade and a g-10 folder.
I use the folder more than the fixed, definitly one of the stoutest folders I have.

How about some sharpening tips?

Bructer you are probably having difficulty sharpening the "Hamaguri" grind on the tip section of the blade. The best methods I have found thus far are to take a rolling action on the Hamaguri grind. It is a slow process but the results are worth it. Also you can take an old MOUSE pad and load it up with polishing compound once you get it fairly sharp and do a nice finish with it.
I would almost have to do a video to get my point across. But there are some older threads on the TOOLSHED section of this Forum on sharpening convex edges. There were some great tips on those threads. Good Luck

Thanks JD,

I have been using the mouse pad for a while and it works fairly well for me. I am always looking for new ways to sharpen the hamaguri tip.

Oh yes. I find the tanto blade one of the most useful, comfortable and versatile blade shapes. I'm talking about the regular tanto, the one with a bit of a belly, not the americanized version with straight blade.
I wish Spyderco comes with an updated tanto, but I don't see it happening too soon :(
