What do you think about tanto blades?

And here’s one for Carbon Fiber Friday

Nothing particularly wrong with a tanto folder for typical EDC tasks.

I stay away from them only because they are more time consuming to sharpen.

Hey folks. What about what a tanto can’t do? The only thing that comes to mind is skinning game. Maybe carving as well?

I've found American tanto style blades quite useful at scraping tasks, and also removing bark from pieces of wood, you know when you have little nubs and dimples in the wood from smaller limbs coming off, it can stop me removing the bark with the regular cutting edge in nice long strokes. So when I get to thopse little stumpy bits I find the tanto edge quite useful in going around and removing the hard to get to bark. I used one to scrape a bunch of paint off some old wood I was using as well.
Tanto + 1 for ninja scraping tasks.

I was scraping glue off of some surfaces with it too.

It's also useful to cut a line into plastic sheet to snap it off on that line...

To punch holes on water bucket bottoms so excess water doesn't kill the plants you'll grow in there.

To pry open paint cans... and so on.

American tanto is ideal for industrial applications...

I think so too, they make pretty good little beater working blades, suited for lots of general use tasks, probably good for construction guys too who open lots of bags of cement and landscapers opening bags of gravel. You can use the little secondary tanto tip to open them up and pierce the bags, so you don't risk ramming your actual primary tip into a bag of stones that might break it off.

good for construction guys too
That's exactly where I used my Recon Tanto the most... it seems that tactical tanto knife is actually ideal construction site knife, it cut lots of tubes/pipes too, and so on.

I used it as a pry bar numerous times and the tip is still in one piece.
That was also my first "real knife"... recently I almost lost it for good as it got stolen, but I was lucky I was able to find out where it was and get it back then...

Nice to see some tantos get some love here. Just used my Kobun for food prep tonight. Probably would’ve had an easier time with a FFG, but the hollow grind performed well enough with peeling and chopping.
B8EEFDBF-C32D-4BF8-8AAD-9FF12F3966B5.jpegJust don’t pry to hard folks. That used to be a tanto

I used to not like them. due to 2 edges to sharpen and maintain. I got over it, and now like them.

I really like them but I get really really really picky when it comes to the bevel(s), and I prefer a lefty bevel chisel grind (that is, lay the open knife on it's spine and you'll find the bevel on the left and everything is perfectly flat on the right) "American-style" tanto

Tanto would be synonymous with "really really really picky" in the dictionary of me(h)*

*my mind:confused:when sick:)

I've always had a few fixed blade tantos that I liked when going innawoods but was always more on the fence about them as a regular carry knife. When this thread got started I became intrigued by them again and ended up buying a Sebenza tanto. I use my knives primarily for work and utility in the type of tasks you'd typically use a razor knife for. I gotta say that over the past few months I've become quite fond of tantos. But I think I'd still prefer ones that are more sleek and slicey than overly thick and angular. I have changed my answer on the pole.
