okay... here are the better pictures. i wrapped the knives this morning. the smaller one turned out a little thicker than i thought that it would, but it fills your hand very nicely.
i am planning on making traditional scabbards for them out of poplar with grenedillo accents. (thoughts?)

nice chord wrap. but i think i would go with a darker color on the bigger one just to show more contrast against the burl underneath.

Nice work Chris-I was a little skeptical when you mentioned wrapping over the burl-but it looks great-really great stuff:thumbup:

everything has it's humble beginnings. the best way to get better is to study the real thing. and this forum made my learning curve go off the chart.
a darker color on the big one.... what color were you thinking? the problem is that the pictures cant do it justice. the cord compliments rather than contrasts the wood. i dont know, i figure if the person who buys it wants a different color, i can swap it out relitivly easily.

You sure have come a long way man. I love these traditional tantos. Best ones I've seen in a long time. Not a whole lot of people are doing them.

you asked what i use to temper the blades, well i heat treat with clay and quench in 11 second oil form McMaster Carr. then i use my mom's oven and heat them at about 400 till they just start turning straw colored.
recomendations? i am still working it out with fear and trembling *laughs*

the background is indeed white. that is closer... but i cant describe it.. it is just not done justice in the pictures... and you just have to hold it... wow... it just is... i dunno solid. it is kinda heavy but it is nice.
