Do any of you have some good tips on how to do a good, flat, tapered tang? More specifically, can this be accomplished on a hf 1x30? I really like them, but I don't want to mess up the knife I have nearly done
Bob Loveles's Book, HOW TO MAKE KNIVES shows how to taper tangs. I have followed his instructions and have done hundreds. It's really easy on a 2"x72" grinder with 2hp motor.
I would not want to try it on a 1"x30" grinder.
I just finished my first one last week and I did it on a Craftsman 2x42. I agree with the others I wouldn't want to try it on a 1x30. Do you have a 3x18 or a 3x21 hand sander? It's a bit rednecked but you could flip it upside down and flatten the tang back out after removing most of the material with the 1x30.
If you do go ahead with this, scribe a center line all along the tang just as you would the blade edge for grinding the bevels.
I make very few tapered tang knives but I do it the Loveless way by grinding a hollow and then on a flat platen like many makers but I have seen some guys do it well and fast on a 9 inch disc grinder with a pre ground hollow on a wheel and also just using the disc. It takes a little horsepower to do them either way but if you can't afford a 2 hp 2x72 belt grinder then you might want to pick up a 1.5 horsepower 1725 rpm motor and put a 9 inch disc on it and get after it. I see used motors on Ebay all the time and you can mount one a piece of 3/4 inch plywood and buy the disc from Beaumont Metal works or from another source like Nathan Carothers. A disc grinder is essential to any shop anyway.
