I made a blade from o1 and when I was doing the handle I wrapped it with blue painters tape like I always did with ATS34. When I unwrapped it a day later it kind of formed a patina and I sanded it down again. I hate doing this once the handles are on and was wondering what you guys do to prevent this. I am going to be putting handles on a Spyderco Mule Team in 52100 steel and I don't want it staining on me. I have hops oil that comes in a gun cleaning kit and some mineral oil on hand. I was thinking of just adding a generous layer of mineral oils then wrapping in blue tape. Whatcha think? Thanks.

Did you try a little solvent? I guess that this was worse than just adhesive residue then?

It also helps to make sure the tape has good even contact with the steel. I've had trouble with little rust stripes whenever I get a wrinkle. I'll certainly try the TP thing too though.

I think not all blue tape is created equal. The stuff I've been using has given me absolutley no problems, while the stuff my brother (and apparently pancho) is using leaves rust. I don't know the brand on mine, but it hasn't given me any trouble on 1080, even if I leave it taped a few days.

Normal I spray mine down with balistol and then Wrap it in TP then tape it. I don't have any problems with rust or scratches.

if your using the tape to protect the blade you could wrap it in aluminum foil it sort of folds over itself to fit nicely.

I just unwrap the tape at the end of the day, give it a squirt of oil and have no problems. I never leave a blade taped over night. That seems to guarantee rust no matter what I put on the blade before wrapping. Leave D2 in a blue tape wrap and you get pits.

I use duct tape and then wash off excess glue with acetone. Try some acetone if that doesnt good ole WD40

I've had the Scotch brand blue painters tape leave some marks on O1 blades. It came off with a few passes of 600 grit. I have not used it straight to O1 since then.

I'll try the aluminum foil trick, thanks Nebulae!

I don't use the blue tape anymore after a couple of bad experiences. Some tapes seem to have something in the adhesive which can cause problems. I just use a good brand masking tape, 3M, and don't leave it on overnight. When I am done for the day, take it off and clean with WD-40 or ballistol.

i use white masking tape all the time. i just untaped a blade thats been taped up for over 2 weeks to protect a side that was finished. it was clean other than lines from the tape edges which are no big deal and will clean up with some oil on a rag. i had tape on the other side but it wasnt quite finished. it doesnt have a patina but there are places you can see where i had touched the blade. i wonder if there is something added to the blue tape adhesive that would cause a reaction? isnt it made to be easily removed or something?
