Tapping 2-56 holes in thick Ti

I use thread forming taps on Ti, you will need to follow the manufacturers chart as far as bit size goes. Thread forming is much stronger on Ti. Moly-Dee works great as tapping fluid on Ti. I need to find my link... on new computer right now.

I think you are right, they need to be thread forming. Now I just gotta pick up a tapmatic!

Those descriptions are kind of meaningless to me.

Show me a photo of the tap..

Here you go

Don't use a hand drill! Use a machine if you can, as stable as possible. I would go with something like this.

Try steam oxide or a coated tap from Shars, for #47 you should have no problem with thread forming. I use #48 with a thread cutting spiral with tapmagic fluid.

tapmatics don't always work, I've had two of them and they will snap or not give you good threads, I've used two of them. Maybe its my drill press, but hand tapping always does the job for me. I tap through .25" Ti that has been hardened pretty regularly.

shoot me an email and I can give you the tap types and numbers if you are interested.
