I haven't done much but I do it by hand with some cutting oil.I use a drill bit 5 thousandths smaller than the tap. The small screws are the hardest and I have already snapped a tap. I talked to an old timer and he told me that he has a foot operated control on his drill press and uses it to tap his.I don't know where to pick one up but if I did I would buy it for sure.
I probably have one of the strangest ways. I use a Skil Power Plus rechargable screwdriver with a small B&D chuck. I've been doing it this way for 12 years and very seldon break taps (even 0x80). The torque is just right. I use the old type Winbro Tapfree.
