Target Knives?

I received several Target gift cards for my birthday recently and I'd like to use them on some kitchen knives because I've heard they are an excellent value for a good knife. I'm not ready yet to spend $75-$100+ for a single knife. Target has several brands, GIADA, CHICAGO CUTLERY, J.A. HENCKELS, VICTORINOX plus a few others. The only thing I know about knives is that my current $35 knife set is terrible! Thank you for any suggestions/advice.

In my opinion maintenance is the key issue, but I'd lean toward Henckels or Victorinox as these are knife companies first and foremost (vs. general kitchen supply companies sourcing their products from unknown manufacturers). However, kitchen knives are not too complicated and most products will do the job for most people. Or, buy a good sharpener for your current knives and learn how to use it.

A couple years back when I was looking for a Leatherman Wave, Target had them at as good a price as anywhere ($75) so I picked one up there.
If you are in the market for a good multitool and they still carry Leatherman, you can't go wrong.

If you're talking about kitchen knives, you really can't go wrong with Victorinox. They are good quality, perform well, are easy to maintain, and are relatively inexpensive. I have no experience with the other brands.

I have a set of the classic J.A. HENCKELS and added a cleaver and a large and small Santoku.
They are great knives; a little pricey though.
Just a seven piece block will cost you around $150 without the Santokus and cleaver.

Honestly though; I use the large and small Santoku knives more than anything, followed by the paring knife and large carving knife.
You could just get those, a steel, and a magnet strip for the wall and be in good shape.

I have a Chicago Cutlery set that my wife and I rec'd for a wedding present 15 yrs ago. But, If I were to buy new kitchen knives now, I would go for the Victorinox with fibrox handles. I consistently see these or the same knives under the Forschner name receive top reviews for value and performance. Plus, I would feel more comfortable handling raw meat and cleaning off the synthetic fibrox handles versus the wood on our Chicago Cutlery.

The fibrox Vics are my wifes favorites in the kitchen. Very comfortable handles and fairly easy to get and keep sharp.

I have Fibrox Vic's mixed among my $100+ kitchen knives and they get plenty of use. Excellent value and great ergos.
