tarp info

The Home Depot ones are polyethylene and not near as reflective as the one Quirt is mentioning.

Sorry guys...been out in the wild and just got in. Primative Man gave you all the contact info in an earlier post a few days ago so I figured you saw it. I got it from the same place as he did. Oregon Firearms Academy. They have an on-line Pro Shop but the tarps are not on line yet. Just call and ask for Vivian - 541-451-5532. Tell her what you want. If no one answers the phone just leave a message and she will get back with you. Or email her at vivian@oregonfirearmsacademy.com

These were originally custom made for a SF unit in a 5' x 8' configuration. They bought all of them except for one which the designer kept for himself. I hunt with him and borrowed his and liked it so much that I bugged him for two years for my own.

Because the hot air balloon materials are so bloody expensive and you have to order an entire roll at a time he waited until he got another order. He did get another order and made up a batch.

These tarps and his standard traps (my green one) are hand made here in the USA in limited quantities. They're not made by the truckloads. So don't expect them to be cheap. They are hardcore tho...which is what you'd expect for a SF mission!

All of my tarps except for the ID Silnylon can be around fire...one of the many reasons I like tarps is I can have a warming reflecive fire shooting heat into my tarp shelter when damp/cold/wet. Silnylon cannot be anywhere near flames/sparks. So I reserve it for summer carry at lower elevations only.

I was going to ask whether the 'hot air balloon material' was more resistent to sparks than the silnylon.....sounds like it is right?

Appreciate the info, Quirt. Can you give us an approximate weight difference compared to a silnylon 10x10?

I just weighted the Black Tarp on my postage scale....the tarp, the zipper carry pouch and all the cordage which goes on all loops including the outer center loop for creating shears or tying up to a limb. It weights 43 ounces.

I told you it isn't any super/ultra light weight tarp. But for wintertime I'll take the extra weight for the warmth and security. When training at 4500' elevation in the snow covered Cascades it works great. It isn't 100% spark resistant - I'm not sure what is these days but it is more resistant than my other nylon tarps.

I have no idea what a silnylon weighs in a 10' x 10' configuration as I don't own one. All I have is the Intergral Designs 5' x 7' that I use in the summer and it super lightweight.

I guess it weighs about what a tent weighs - I dunno cuz I don't use tents. I like the capacity to have a fire which a tent doesn't allow, and I can create seven or eight variations in the dark...when weather gets bad I change out to a configuration that puts it closer to the ground...when weather is fair to nice I go with a Whelan and still can have a fire. Also I like to be able to see out in case there is a problem and I can jet out quickly.
