Tarps (hammock addicts)

I'm building so far out because I'm being paid to :D (my family and I are looking at land off 299 east of arcata, but this particular job is a paying job.) The owner of the land wants to retire halfway between featyher falls and nowhere.

The elevation on site is 2700 feet, but I live in davis (52 feet) and the family camping range goes up to about 6000 in the summer down to 3000 in the winter (due to kids being young)

sounds like I'm right in between you and mountain mike, and getting ready to introduce my 4 year old to the joys of archery....

I have the Integral Designs SilNylon 8' x 10' tarp. It is palatial, and packs down to about 8" long by 3 or 4" in diameter, and well under a pound in weight.

Cannot wait to use it. For one or two guys + gear, it will be great!

Integral Designs has a very good reputation. Nobody seems to factory seam-seal Sil-Nylon, though, so you do that yourself. with stuff called "Sil-Nett". My tarp came with a little "Form-A-Gaskett" sized tube of this stuff, which I had to apply with a couple of acid brushes.

Wait till your wife isn't home to seal your tarp, cause Sil-Nett will stink up your whole house:rolleyes:

Check out this guy. I used to work with him.

Cooke Custom Sewing

Check out his shelters.

He has made stuff that Wil Steger used on some of his expeditions.

His Mukluks are supposed to be prety nice.

+1 on Cooke, I have one and love it, it's the older 1.9oz Tundra tarp put is still going strong. I looked at the 1.1oz tarps at the time buy them also and was amazed how small a 10x12 tarp could pack down, but couldn't swing the extra cake at the time.

Thanks for your response. There was a time that I would have killed for a chance at a construction job in the Sierra wilderness. You're going to love helping and watching your child grow up with a bow in their hands. Our daughter still talks about all the fun we had when she was first learning and that was 15 years ago. She even mentioned picking it up again so that she could start her twin daughters in a few years.

This past summer I came across a discontinued MSR Trekker's Tarp. I was skeptical that I could incorporate the design into my hammock camping setup, but I tried it, and it worked fantastically. It provided more protection from the elements than any of my other tarps. Plus, if the weather really turned for the worse, I could rig it on the ground like a tent for total coverage.

My last setup:

what kind of backpack is that? and i would suggest to OP just make your own tarp.

The pack in my pic is a Dana Designs Bighorn. The pack is near empty and the top lid is removed and hanging to the right. The capacity of the pack is about 3600 ci.
