Tarps

my freind and i have gone out on the driveway in the middle of the winter and fallen asleep, only to wake up an hour later with snow falling on us (we got up and went inside) we were wearing heavy winter clothes, but staying warm in teh winter is not thathard, as long as you are careful

How was your hangover, the next day? :D

yea, winter camping can be quiet fun.Although I have only done it in a camp like thing made of layers of tarps and brush, It was insanly warm and comfortable, and really fun.

I Have Only used a plastic tarp shelter once during a sar field training exercise. I found that the plastic tarp caused alot of condensation even though it was set up in an A-frame not on my body. I had attempted to use a heavy emergency blanket as part of my bed roll, but found it to form too much condensation when directly on my sleeping bag. I instead used it a as a groung cloth under my foam mat.

Some of the condensation may have been due to the fact that i bedded down after eight hours of feild training with a full pac and was probably still sweaty, I did change clothes once i had gotten settled in the shelter but the condensation was already there.

For me the answer is an inexpensive nylon tarp its lighter and more compact, and can provide better shelter in hot weather than plastic. I also find less condensation than with the plastic, I havent given it a real field test yet but others who used them on the training exercise were happy with them.

As an example, a couple of weeks ago, a couple of buddies and I spent a few days out in the woods playing abo. I think I posted a picture of the blue-tarp-covered wickiup that we stayed in. The first night we (2 of us) got there, it was well after dark, so we through a tarp over the back of my buddies pickup:

The next morning, the tarp was ice covered on the underside.

bah, you didn't need those sleeping bags, That rum and coke would have kept me going.

The warmest shelter I've ever been in was a 'Snow Igloo.' It was one of those things you build in Boyscouts: bunch of snow piled up, sticks added for ventilation, then hollowed out.

It was built large enough for four, but it for got so warm inside it was uncomfortable, and larger holes had to be made for ventilation.

Low is definitely the way to go :)

Well, after a bottle of Don Julio Blanco, I've done the same. But it wasn't much on purpose...
