I thought alberich had a good question, and that this should be broken out of the 6/16 sales thread. The answer surprised me.

Just curious, where the Tarwars (is it the straight sword?) have typically a point of balance?

I wonder... Lemme check...

Neem Tarwar:

2 lbs, 7.4 oz. (39.4 oz.)

.30 thick

21" blade, 8.25" handle with guard

29.25" OA

balances 6.5" in front of the guard, so...

Balance point: 14.5"

____

Does this mean it's well balanced? Almost smack halfway.

Can anyone else weigh in? Tarwars are really amazing in the hand. As a tool/weapon, their utility is pretty versatile. Absolutely this one can be swung with one hand for a machete-like hack, or with both hands doubled up for a baseball-bat-like swing. The handle permits both holds.

HI sales thread pic. Tru-Oiled neem many many coats, new pic to come after blade etching.

Oh, yeah- it's a Kumar. His work shines.

Tarwar by Bura, chandan handle --

Blade length/handle length: close enough to Mike's to be essentially identical.
PoB: 5.5" forward of the guard.
Weight: 35 ounces.

A point of balance 4-6" forward of the guard on an average sized sword is generally pretty good if not nearly perfect. Most people consider it a nice tradeoff between an agile blade and some oomph on a swing.

Considering a tarwar's intended use it could probably go a few inches beyond this and still be fine, but I'm quite happy with where it is now.

Man, the Tarwar has been on my list for...oh, 4 years now. I need another sword like i need a hole in my head ( however, one could help me out with the other;)).
We're on a fixed income until the wife goes back to work in August, so no toys for awhile:(

My tarwar is the one on the shopping site. I don't have access to it right now so I can't tell you the POB, but it is 29" long and about 36 ounces.

Mike, the first one I got was by Bura, satisal with brass rings in the wood. It's 29.5" and 39 oz. It balances almost exactly halfway, at 15" from the pommel, 7" in front of the guard.

I snagged a lighter one last year by Kumar, with smooth polished hill walnut handle. Sweet has one just like it from around the same time. It's also 29.5" but 34 oz. That moved the balance rearward 1/2" to 14.5" from the pommel and 6.5" in front of the guard.

They are both nice, but for pure cut-em-in-half slicing I would take the slightly more forward/spine heavy Bura. Impressive blade.

BTW, you got a nice one there. I _think_ that might be the first ever in neem wood.

Regards,

Norm

The balance seems to bve equal to a boken, but the handle is 2" shorter... which means less leverage. But I think it can still be controlled with acceptable precision, while cutting strongly, can it?

BTW the design is traditional, or it's a new kind of a sword? It somehow resembles a ninja-to, but I'm no expert so I can hardly say if ninja-to is real design or some Hollywood novelty like the black ninja outfit.

I'm no expert either, but from my limited exposure to martial arts I believe that both the ninja-to AND the black outfits were really used by ninjas. The tarwar because it's meant for chopping would be a bit heavier than a sword meant only as a weapon......... I too, would be interested to know if this is a traditional design or a new one......I'm guessing it's a modern design brought to us by HI.
