Tarwar...

Dave,

Is your hand touching the guard when you hold the sword? Is that why it is digging into your hand?

If so, back off the guard slightly, until you do not feel its presence, but not half way down the handle. The guard will still do what it was made to do, and not get in your way.

Is the handle round, or does it have enough of an oval shape, like the khuks, to determine the position of the edge w/o looking?

Do you know what the tang looks like?

Thanks for the pics. That is a very nice blade.

Dave - thanks for the info about the blade. It is pretty thick and strong.

You must have BIGGG hand, since you wrote -

"Handle thickness is about 11.5 cm at the "bulge".
10.4 cm near the guard.
Shape is a fat oval, not perfectly cylindrical."

I would have a problem with a handle that is that thick.

????

Terry:

My hand naturally gravititates toward the guard, particularly with heavy cutting. The shape of the handle seems, at least for me, to slide your hands naturally into certain positions.

The handle is oval shaped.

I don't know what the tang looks like, and unfortunately I don't have any big magnets around.

Arty:

the measurements I took refer to circumference.

This one's a cutter. It took very little practice to get to diagonal slashes.

Two-handed (first cut I ever made with it):

Pwned.

One-handed (took a few tries, but is par for the course now):

All your base are belong to us.

This is one of my favorites; it's a one-handed sword that gains a little and loses nothing with two hands. Not all swords can claim this. It also handles smaller trees fairly well. (No video yet, but I'm working on that.)

On the standardized hanging beer can test, this one rates an A+.

Just in case you didn't have anything planned for tomorrow, Dave... :)

P.S. Empty beer cans available upon request. You haul.

Love those videos!

Dave, mine is exactly the same dimensions as yours. I don't know how Bura keeps the size and weight so consistent! The difference is I don't have that pretty engraving on the brass at the guard, but my handle is a series of sections of beautifully polished wood with brass rings every few inches. The handle work alone is beautiful. Except for the manjushri, it is by far my favorite sword.

Regards,

Norm

I'd love a steel mounted, horn chiruwa version though.

Than I'd sand the handle and the fittings down to a more matte finish.

I can dream can't I?

I wonder how much the Chiruwa would change the balance on the Tarwar?
I've mentioned before that I wish I could've designed the Rose with the Chiruwa handle. I truly believe it would have improved the balance on it quite a lot.
Actually I'm kind of surprised Bura hasn't done one yet.
If I ever see one come up in time y'all had better wachyerfinner's! :p :D ;)

As long as the handle doesn't get fatter, I think a chiruwa rose would be incredible.

The chiruwa handle on the katanas makes all the difference in the world. The blade sits back in your hand and balances like a dream. I have another katana without the chiruwa handle that actually weighs less than the other, but feels like it weighs more because of the heavy blade forward balance.

The Tarwar I think would benefit greatly (as Dave surmises) by the addition of a heavy Chriruwa handle. But, there is something to be said about that heavy blade forward in a downswing, just being controlled by the light handle. It can do a lot of major chopping with just minimal effort.

Norm

Mmmmmm....Tarwar.

Been thinking about one for a while....unfortunately nothing you said has dissuaded me! :D
