JackBauer24's thread reminded me. This weekend I took my son into the back yard to teach him how to build a fire. We gathered up all the layers and brought them back to the spot we cleared and got things ready. We got the ember but could not get a flame. I felt like an idiot. Then we changed tinder and got it going.

Now I'm going to have him do it all by himself.

WHAT!!! how could u...teaching a child such a valuable skill.....wow what a bad parent.....haha just make sure he knows when not to make a fire...lol

AWSOME! I wish I had someone to teach me things like that growing up.

As you add a skill, you have to add the necessary responsibility/maturity with it. I am sure he can handle it.

I think he can. I started taking him hunting last year and was please with how he handled himself. Even though I started much younger and by his age was hunting on my own, he had to start somewhere. So now that he has gone hunting and we have two trips planned this year he has a glimmer on why I am showing him this stuff. That makes it more meaningful to him and gives a point of view. If he had never hunted and one day I took him out to learn some things he would have had no connection why. "Just another thing my nutcase dad is having me do...".
