Well mr tax man was nice to me this year, and i'm looking for suggestions as to what to get

might have as much as 300 to spend on a knife. suggestions please?

it'll be my really nice edc. i have: bm 940, bm 805, bm 53, lone wolf Paul Defender, with the hogue ex1 4" tanto/Al and bm 860 inbound

Given that you still have a relatively small number of knives/brands in your collection (by the standards of this forum!), you might pick up two or three $100-150 knives for that money rather than spending it on a single $300 folder.

The Spyderco Gayle Bradley is a knife that I can't recommend highly enough, and it definitely fits the bill for a "really nice EDC". The Sage 1 and 2, as well as the Caly 3 CF, would also be ones to consider. They'd also fill a gap since you don't yet have any smaller-bladed knives (right now, the BM 940, at 3.4" is your smallest), and all are good-looking knives (CF scales on the Sage 1 and Caly, titanium on the Sage 2).

You could also look into something from Kershaw/ZT -- maybe a ZT 0551 if you can get your hands on one. Another brand that's not talked about too much but makes high-quality, elegant knives is Mcusta.

I have about the same amount as you I get in return. I`m drooling over the Sage 2 Ti from Spyderco. That or a small Sebenza.

the 53 has a blade thats just a tad over 3", good deal shorter than the 940..

i find spydies rather unappealing aesthetically, but have been meaning to get my hands on the brands i like.

i should mention the spyderco Navaja is on my short list, and i've been eyeballing the mcusta yoroii for some time now.

just looking for other ideas that might jump to the front of the list :D

something damascus. it is really hard to be scared of a piece of art, and it is different enough to make people who would normally recoil from a knife lean in a little closer to look. why not save them money, and then put it together with next year's money and buy a damascus Sebenza.

buy the spyderco Warrior, thas what my tax return will go to, i have no use for this knife whatsoever but its just so damn cool i will have to have it

Ah, shows what I know about balis. :p

no worries my friend. its quite the knife though, one of my favorite users. don't mind getting it dirty one bit. once i get my paper wheels set up i'm sure it'll always be right there in my back pocket

everyone's suggesting the sebenza... i'd almost rather have the umnumzaan but BF seems to think i need a smaller folder huh... maybe i'll snag a small

For what it's worth, I briefly had a small Sebbie with black micarta inlays. I found the handle a bit too small for comfort, and the knife as a whole just a bit too small for my liking, so I ended up trading it for an Umnumzaan, which I absolutely love. You and I seem to have similar tastes in terms of knife size (larger!), so you might end up in the same boat if you got the small Sebbie. All of this is a roundabout way of saying: get the Umnumzaan!

well to be completely honest i've been on a large knife kick here recently. but the 940 is the knife that fits my hand the best. handle is about the perfect size. blade could be a tad longer but good luck finding a more even handle to blade ratio...

I would recommend the following combination:

Spyderco Military - It's a staple of any knife collection. A large 4" blade, excellent steel and ergonomics, strong lock, easy carry.

Kershaw Speedform II - Gentleman's folder with some excellent steel (ELMAX). It's a terrific knife, very similar to the Leek with subtle differences.

Small Insingo Sebenza - One of the best blade shapes ever. Beautiful design, simple and easy to maintain.

ZT 0303 - Strong and very beefy 4" blade. Ti framelock with a great texture.

That honestly sounds almost exactly like a Large Sebenza 21, not a small.

Excuse the crappy cellphone pics, but here are some comparisons to a 943 (which has the same blade-length but a different shape):

Hope this helps.

Just measured them with some calipers, and it looks like the Sebenza is ~0.6mm thicker than the BM 94x when measured on the scales. Hardly noticeable, and if one measures from the Axis-lock bar vs the screws on the Sebenza, the Sebenza is thinner by ~0.9mm.

I believe it is ~1.8 ounces.

IIRC the Large 21 is 4.7 ounces, and the 940 is 2.92 ounces.

Ugh. So it is heavier. Unfortunately for me that's a good thing....

What's the difference between an umnumzaan and large? Also which blade profiles are best? The standard? The tanto? The insigno? Are there any I'm forgetting?
