Tax money

Well, I got a S&W 627-5 8 shot .357 revolver last weekend. I also hope to purchase an ESEE Junglas but I can't find one right at the moment. When I do...BAM...Junglas!!!

Ugh. So it is heavier. Unfortunately for me that's a good thing....

What's the difference between an umnumzaan and large? Also which blade profiles are best? The standard? The tanto? The insigno? Are there any I'm forgetting?

Here's a pic I took a while ago with some Spyderco's for comparison:

The Umnumzaan is very slightly longer, has a glassbreaker, has a ceramic ball as the contact for the tang, uses thumbstuds as a bladestop, has a thicker blade, has a series of ramps and a sharpened swedge, and has polyurethane O-rings to soften opening.

I find the Sebenza to be a better EDC, but the Umnumzaan just feels like a beast. The Umnumzaan is also a bit thicker than the Sebenza handle-wise, Sebenza at exactly 11mm, and the Umnumzaan at ~11.8mm.

If you find yourself wavering between the two, I'd say go for the Sebenza. You can always get an Umnumzaan later if the Sebenza doesn't satisfy you--but, again, the Sebenza is a better slicer.

Hmmm I like the looks of the umnum more but you make intriguing points. Still wanna hear input on the different blade shapes available before I go spending 400 on a folder...

I've only used the standard 21's and the Umnumzaan's. I've heard that the Insingo slices even better, but I've never used one, so I don't think I can really comment on that.

There is also the Regular Sebenza's blade shape, which has more belly and the grind extends a little further. It's hard to explain without a picture, and I don't have a Regular on hand.

CRK's Tanto grind is very interesting, and if you want to go for extreme tip strength, that is what you want to go for.

Before you shell out $385 for a Large Sebenza, I'd find a brick and mortar store and handle a few before you make a decision.

You sir are dedicated to spending my money however there are no brick and mortor stores in Minnesota that carry them, not that I'm aware of.

According to CRK's website, there are four stores that carry Chris Reeve knives in Minnesota.

Click on the domestic dealers pdf and scroll down to Minnesota.

And yes, I am determined to bring you into the Sebenza club! :)

Na, haha. I'm just trying to be helpful :)

Well of the four dealers, two list addresses and one of those doesn't list a town. The one that does is roughly 300 miles away from me :(

You sir, are killing me.

How is this possible when they have the same blade grind? Optical illusion maybe?

Both are hollow ground, but the Umnumzaan's blade is thicker than the Sebenza's. Exactly 3mm on the Sebenza, and ~3.52mm on the Umnumzaan. That is about 15% thicker, while keeping the same blade-grind.

Kind of like comparing the FFG Endura to the FFG Paramilitary 2. If the Umnumzaan's blade was 15% taller than the Sebenza's then it would even it out slicing ability a bit more, but with the same grinds, the thinner knife (assuming all else is the same) will slice better since it is displacing less material when cutting.

(Edit) It wouldn't be 15% taller. The hollow grinds on both are ~20mm tall. To retain the same ratios for the angle of the bladegrinds, the Umnumzaan's hollow grind would need to be ~3.47mm taller.

That's interesting, thanks for the specifics. I was actually looking in a couple different tool bags to see if I could find my micrometer, you saved me from making more noise. :D

does anyone know if the tanto is hollow ground as well? or is it ground differently to accommodate the blade style
