Why are they so in demand? (Yes, they are beautiful, and yes, I would love to have one, but the ones up for auction seem to always bring huge prices with a lot of bids.)

Supply & demand. Near custom quality at production pricing. For me personally I didn't really get that into them until I met Charlie in person & bought a couple from him. His passion for them really rubbed off on me & he's just a great guy to talk to & deal with. :)

I think many would agree that Hoarding and Flipping ing is not in the spirit with which they were made.

The ugly knives that no one wants are fairly inexpensive...

They are beautiful pieces of cutlery one day im going to have to get me one

They are all special factory orders, commissioned by Charlie Campagna (waynorth on this forum). They are sold directly by him, through e-mail since he has no on-line storefront. The pattern is very appealing to many people. They are on the GEC #15 frame, which is an ideal size, and Charlie is a wizard when it comes to driving innovations in blade choices, shield combinations, and handle materials. In short, he knows what people want and what will sell.

I don't own any of the TC Barlows but I do have a couple of the regular GEC 15s which are on the same frame but with different bolster layout. They are great pocketable knives that are just the right size. The addition of the long bolster with the TC engraving on the Barlow models just adds that extra interest to it.

Due to the fact that they are only available directly from him (with the occasional few that some dealers are allowed to sell) and they are only produced when Charlie feels like running an order of them, the original source is rather constrained and you kind of have to know the secret handshake to even know where to buy them. That plus the hype they get here (I don't mean that in a negative way, but there is a LOT of interest generated in this forum) makes for an in-demand product.

That and the fact that Esnyx buys up about 90% of them on the Exchange forum and re-handles them for re-sale. :P

I think you might be mis-informed on that one. Evan buys for HIS OWN collection and does not make his customs from the Charlows, only other 15 frames.

The few exceptions I know of are a small number of Beerlows.

A trusted and knowledgable source told me this. ;)

On top of that, Evan is a very generous and polite forum member.

They're wonderful knives, some of the best GEC has made. But a big factor in the demand is the forum here. It's a double-edged sword. If not for this forum you would never have known of the TC barlows. But the very thing that exposed you to them allows others to learn of them as well. Throw in a few glowing reviews and some gorgeous pictures and it's no surprise that there is a strong demand. Combine that with the limited numbers made means that the few that reach the secondary market will fetch a pretty penny.

Is this a trick question?

As stated - supply and demand - BECAUSE the quality of the knife is outstanding, Charlie made his SFO's in lost Traditional styles come alive again with a combination of great knowledge, great passion and working with one of the best in the business - Bill @ GEC.
The price for the quality received is almost insane - these are VERY good knives- the balance for value for money is way out of kilter.
Adding also that aesthetically they are beautiful.

I would just like to add that people seem to be REALLY hung up on the price of a knife- as Christian said- you get that- limited numbers- great product- this is everyday stuff here people- it happens with good Wine- the Share Market, Cars, models etc etc etc..... C'mon guys really? - it's not that bigger deal and it's not something new.

It's not in the spirit but that doesn't stop people from buying more than a few to turn over some extra coin.
