Back in November I took my son and oldest daughter into the woods and taught them how to build a shelter and a fire with a knife and firekit.

I finally got all the pics together and thought I'd share. We had a lot of fun building this shelter and the kids interest in the woods and camping is peaked.

I used this RC-4 to build the shelter. No cordage used.

Thanks for the great pics! As a father of four, ranging in age from 7-almost 16 haha....I enjoy teaching my kids the same. I know times are changing...computers...video games etc, but it's still good to teach our kids how to survive outdoors if something ever happened.

Great work, dad! Beats the hell out of Xbox and watching another installment of The Real Housewives.

Thats quality time spent! Well done! It is always cool to see parents who care enough about their children to take them out into the bush and tech them the ways of the land. super cool, and good job on the debris shelter!

that's awesome! i have a few years before i'll be able to do this, but i'm looking forward to it. also, glad i have some time to get my crap together. :)

What a great learning experience for them. One day I hope to teach my children these valuable skills.

Great example of a good parent spending time with his kids. Two less people we have to worry about in our society who's parents didn't care.

It's always good to teach your children outdoor skills and get them outside more. Nice job and great pics too!

Thanks for all the great comments. It's now been 2 months since we built it and the shelter is still intact. Even with a fresh 16" of snow.

Just wondering the brand of the pouch you attached to the ESSE4 molle back?

It's an ESEE 5/6 pouch. It's a tight squeeze, but the 5/6 pouch will attach to the 4's sheath and molle back.

Nice pics. I can't wait till mine are old enough to get out in the woods.

I have three of that same little Gerber. It is my pocket clip EDC. One day when your bored, pull the screws and locktite them.

Nice job!!!!
I plan to take my kids out this year to do the same.

I'm a Cubmaster with the BSA, and last fall was family camp chairman. FYI, I was the guy who put the event together, chose the theme and activities, and then ran it. I called it Cubs vs. Wild, I know but kids love Bear Grills. He's not bad in my opinion, he was special forces. I taught the very basics of survival to them. Shelter (debris), Water (how to find and 3part filter and boil), Fire (gather right material and spark w/ steel), and Food (very basic and how to cook on coals not flames). I lead an actively outdoor scouting program and realized that these kids need to know this stuff. Taught about 120 kids successfully, I had a Q&A contest later with prizes like hot sparks. Sorry no pics.

Maybe I'll post some stuff of just me and my boy another time.

ESEERATFAN,

Thanks for sharing the post & pictures!

Not only did you teach your children some important things but you all have some great memories that will last a lifetime. Congratulations!

Love to see this, I do the same every chance I get. My daughter is eleven and loves the outdoors. My son will be old enough for boy scouts soon and it looks like we will be getting signed up.

Thanks for sharing!
