Hello everyone,

It's been a while but I am starting to finally pick up a few more knife making projects now. One thing I am looking for now is a web site I can buy pieces of teak wood.

One thing specifically I am looking for is a handle for a Quan Doe type short sword I have. I would like to make the handle out of one solid piece and about 2-3' long, and oval or roundish. Does anyone know where I can get a piece of wood to fit that description?

I would also like to use it for some simpler projects also like scales for knife handles and so forth.

Does anyone know where to get any bamboo or rattan that is good for making sword and knife handles?

Thanks for any help.

Cool, thanks. Anyone else have any sites to add to the list?

Wow, the wood lady has a lot of stuff. Does anyone have any aditional suggestions on what a good hard wood would be for Asian style swords and/or a good weapon wood for things like Escrima sticks or long handles that can hold up to a beating. Thanks.

http://www.paxtonwood.com

I must admit I haven't checked their website out much, but they have a store locally, but I have always enjoyed dealing with them here locally, good wood, good selection, good prices.

My Escrima sticks are cheap ones I bought on Ebay, and are made of oak. But even being that cheap, they work well, and have held upwell to abuse.

Cool sites. I have a question though. I think I am calculating the board foot wrong (I hope so at least)

What I would probably need is a 2" wide - 24" long - 2" deep. Basically a 2x2 THAT IS 24" long. If I understand it correctly the board foot is 2 X 24 = 48 / 12 = 4 X 2 = 8 board feet which would cost a measly $164.47  :grumpy:

Maybe Oak would be a better option for me. Teak would still be doable though for knife handles.

How on earth could someone afford a teak wood floor? I guess if your rich.

The board feet calculation is simple: a board foot is a unit 1" thick by 12" wide by 12" long so you have 144 sq inches in a board foot the forumla is therefore

(length-in inches * width in inches * thickness in inches) / 144 = amount of board feet

so a piece: 2" * 2" * 24" / 144 = .667 bd feet - big difference eh.
