tearing down the vehicle for survival

If the battery is still live use the horn to signal.

Magnatize the end of a sliver of steel with the magnet in one of the speakers for a makeshift compass.

aw but the truck is at a pretty steep angle down the ravine, facing forward.

- tranny oil, hub oil, transfer case oil, and rear diff oil can all be drained out, thats about 40 liters of additional oil for lamps, stinky smoky signal fires, fire starting, (in addition to the engine oil and power steering fluid)

- headliner can be carefully removed for a blanket or clothing.

- rear window seals can be pulled out and sliced down the middle to form 2 long lengths of cordage

- driveshaft can be used as a vertical pounding tool

- air cleaners (paper) and housing can be rigged up as a sediment prefilter

- carbon canister ...............?

- spare tire can be burned, and the steel braids inside salvaged afterwards for making a ton of rabbit/squirel snares

- catalytic converter..........?

as for the RED camera, this is it here http://www.red.com/images/pages/cameras/banner.png http://www.red.com/ it AINT cheap.........but it is infinitely UPGRADEABLE and adaptable to whatever shooting needs your after. I put in a film grant application to the government, if i get it i'll be buying RED , if not i'll be renting from the local film crew here.

In the winter, you could rip out the foam from the seats and fashion into foot warmers that would also serve as snow shoes. Tie them around your feet with wires. Credit for this goes to Les Stroud from the show I Shouldn't Be Alive (I think that's the right show).

do NOT drink out of the radiator!

you were right to begin with when you said "at least not toxic like something that held coolant" and then you go on to discuss drinking water from the radiator.

rust would be the least of your worries

Good call, I specifically say not to drink something, then say to drink out of what it's stored in  That's what I get for trying to think through something like this when I wake up in the middle of the night and decide to surf the interwebz.

at some point this late fall, i will be towing a truck into the BC woods and doing just this, and shooting with a RED camera all the uses of a vehicle in the woods

any chance of taking it to a wreckers and not leaving a derelict vehicle in the woods?

Or is this just a hypothetical?

I agree with using the cab as shelter as is.
I don't know anyone that would rip apart a decent shelter to use tha materials to sleep outside...It wouldn't make sense from an effort or comfort perspective.
don't go Bear Grillys stupid and give up commonsense just for entertainment sake

glass = solar still

seat belts are kickass rope

cold steel- cut off the rear quarter panels and beat them into water boiling containers
have to burn off the paint
...should hold gallons of water

tire bead wire is 1075

You can't do anything with a tire INNER-TUBE because all modern vehicles use tubeless tires

If there is a plastic bed liner, it would make premade waterproof shelter cover, or water container.

I agree, Do it on your own property, where you can chop and spill crap all you want. Don't mess up the wilderness for the rest of us.

you are right about the inner tube. Dating myself

KARDA and others,

the planned set location is on PRIVATE PROPERTY, zoned for industrial usage.

thank you for your concern, however you should be more concerned about the BP spill in YOUR country, than a small indie film set location NOT in your country.

thank you for your concerns about the earth.

this is a great idea for a thread, lots of good things to think about.

My one input would be that even if the glass is broken in the cab of the truck i would still say sleep in it. it would be easier to patch a window or two then to go out and build a brand new shelter.

I'll keep thinking though.

Fun thread, Bushie! Kind of like the exercises Brian would dish up a while ago. (I will assume the reason the truck is being canabilized is that it is not in a suitable location to use as a shelter.) A lot of the basics have been covered. Good call, Andrew on mentioning the bedliner. A huge chunk of plastic like that would be great! Here are a few that occur to me:

Hood - The hood should be removable withought too much effort. (Multitool plyers or socket. If necessary, brute force and leverage.) Could be used for a shelter wall or roof component, a fire reflector or a perhaps formed into a crude woodstove.

Tailgate - Easily removable without tools, but heavy. Could serve as a section of a shelter wall or as a fire reflector.

Don't forget the truck's contents! CDs, reciepts, owners manual, sun shade, etc. . .

or if your with someone else who is injured in the accident, you could make a stretcher out of the tailgate, tie a rope, seatbelt or vine etc. to it, and drag them out of the woods. It would be great to use especially if they had a back injury and you HAD to move them.

License plate could be bent to make a shovel.

Jack handle for hitting things and the wheel nuts could be used in a sling made of seatbelt material. Every good truck has an old knife in it and a tape measure right :)

Maybe you should've made that clear in your FIRST post.
And i am concerned about POLLUTION wherever it lies.

plastic bed liner and sheet metal for shelter
burn the tires for a signal fire+smoke
glass for a small blade or arrowhead
wires as snare material or cordage

Another option for the tires,,, cut the sidewalls off to burn for signalling,,save the treads, and cut them for shoe soles like the huarace sandals the Tarahumara Indians wear :D :D

nope, the scenario is the truck has driven off a logging road and crashed far down in a ravine, 500 klicks from the nearest town.

what? no on-star? kidding.

can't believe no one mentioned using the brake pads and leather seats as stropping material yet. then you can post here how you can shave your arm hair with the truck's leaf springs :D now, about having access to the interwebs...

i grew up with dad making my shoes from old tires. Nothing beats tire sandals.
