Teaser - My BK2 folder!

Very cool, have you given it a name yet? If not may I suggest "pocket campanion" keep us updated with the progress. I can't wait to see it finished.

Honestly over the past year I asked more than a few about the project but no one wanted to take it on until Alan.

My instructions were to make it as close in size and shape as feasible to the BK2 (the original not the newer version) we shot emails back and forth with me bowing to his knowledge on certain facets of the design, and common sense like having to shorten the blade since on the BK2 the blade is longer than the handle which would be problematic with a folder. And going with 3/16th over 1/4" thickness just because he convinced me it would be too thick in a folder. He drew up the design and the pictures I posted were the 1st I've seen it, and I gotta say I am pretty excited.

The appeal? Well I like different things than everyone which is why I was drawn to the BK2 to begin with. Most people just see the drawbacks of a 1/4" thick piece of steel as a camp knife. Not me. I have another camp chopper made for me by Bruce Culberson that is over 2' long and is 3/16" thick. I am working on a redesign of the knife from the movie Predator that Bruce is going to do for me too and it's gonna be a really big knife.

So Alan's interpretation of a BK2 folder will fit right in ;-)

He emailed me a top down photo I will post it tommorow, gotta get to bed and get up early to do the turkey.

Up early, gotta stuff the bird with bacon, oranges and bay leaves then wrap it in more bacon and then into the smoker for 14 hrs ;)

Here's a pic top down, remember the blade isn't ground yet and we haven't decided what to do for a spacer yet. Asked me if I wanted any file work done? Not sure on that gotta think it over. I also emailed Alan about what steel we decided to use for the blade I can't remember. I do know the rest of the knife is titanium.

While it is styled much like a BK2 I did want micarta handles similar to my BK2 (which was customized by knifemaker Lamont Coombs) and I didn't want a black blade (my BK2 is bead blasted) so we decided on a stonewash finish for the blade. And anodizing the liners blue. I may have him do some filework on the spacer don't think I want any on the blade itself. I am also leaning towards having him bevel the spine so that much like a gun made for concealed carry there are no sharp edges on it when closed and in my pocket. Again not sure on that.

Here's a spine shot:

We are using 154cpm and right now the thickness is .215 but will probably end up around .210 so thicker than 3/16”

Also won't be using a solid titanium spacer as per Alan "A solid titanium back spacer is not feasible, I would need .270 thick and the cost of that would be around $200 a piece if I could find it that thick, not to mention to cut titanium that thick would take a carbide band saw blade, I already made some titanium spacers from round stock, but if you want solid, I will have to use micarta."

Who knew? So we will be using round titanium spacers ;)

I know it will most likely never happen but if something like that went into production and was anywhere south of $200 then I would have to have one the moment it was released. too bad that will never be. I would imagine even a bare-bones custom knife like that without any decoration probably cost more than the '74 pontiac catalina I just sold.

Yeah, prolly.
That's one of the reasons why I want to start forging myself, cheaper than having someone else do it for me.

So we decided he's going to do some filework to the liners, the liners will be anodized blue. The spacers will be beadblasted to match the blade. I am also going to see if he can do the pocket clip blue.

still a cool project - and I approve of the open back design -- makes it much easier to clean out after getting it seriously dirty.
