techniques for hand forging a bevel on a knife blade

Basically any knowledge you can offer would be a help. I have been practicing hand forging the bevels on the knife, but i need a lot more practice to get the right angle and consistency to make an even bevel. Does any one use a tool or jig to hammer out the bevels? i have heard of people who do. Just interested to hear if there is an easier way. Thanks
