Techno steel change from CTS-XHP to CPM S30V?

IMHO (and it might be not the most popularnopinion here on the forum) I see NO DIFFERENCE between XHP (Techno) and S30V (Chubby) performance in terms of edge retention and cutting performace/aggression. Design & usability is of course quite different, but steel? Reaaly, it's exactly the same. And personally I prefer S30V as I've had nothing but great expirience with S30V, especially heat treated by Spyderco. So for me it's fine actually. Might have been communicated better, maybe. But it doesn't affect the performance of Techno as a knife / tool.

I agree I am looking at it from more of a like to have folders of different steels standpoint. I specifically bought the techno to try the steel as I already have a few blades with s30v, just my opinion but I like more variety which is what attracted me to spyderco in the first place.

I spoke to someone at Spyderco and they said that a batch of Technos went out in S30V "by mistake," and that S30V models will not be replacing the CTS-XHP ones and will not be available for sale.

If true, that's a very weird mistake, but it certainly helps to exonerate Spyderco in this case, insofar as they're not intentionally switching up the steels in their knives without telling anyone. Interesting!

Hi everyone, I would have posted sooner, but I had to get some clarification myself first.

Put simply, this was an honest mistake. There was one production run made with CPM S30V. The CPM S30V Techno is shipping through normal distribution with no change in pricing.

We are working on updating the copy on our site and in the Product Information Guide that is included with the knife to acknowledge the use of CPM S30V. Future production runs will be with CTS XHP.

CPM S30V and CTS XHP are very comparable in both price and performance. Both are made here in the U.S. and both are shipped to our maker in Taiwan for production of some of the finest knives that we offer. Our maker in Taiwan is above reproach and continues to prove worthy of the extra time and expense it takes to ship high-performance U.S. steel for Spyderco production in Taiwan.

If you received a CPM S30V Techno but prefer one made with CTS XHP, please either return it to your retailer for a refund or contact our W&R department to see if an exchange is available. We will not have more CTS XHP Technos available until fall 2015, but we will work with you to process an exchange. CPM S30V Technos sent in for exchange must be unused and in original packaging. Please contact W&R via e-mail at customerservice@spyderco.com prior to shipment of your knife.

Thank you all for your passionate interest in Spyderco.

ONE thing we knew for sure... spyderco was going to let us know!
Really can not expect or ask for more than that!
(And of course, provide a fix if called for).

What kind of accident would need to occur for Moki to inadvertently make a Kiwi 4 run in Super Blue? I was planning to visit Japan soon anyway and can make arrangements.

Are you proposing a special ops covert mission?

Where is the Moki factory anyway?

I believe it's in Seki City, about half way between Tokyo and Osaka. Lot's of knife makers there. It would be like going to Portland in the US, or Solingen in Germany, or Maniago, Italy. It would be SWEET!

And that Reddit thread is funny with all the experts saying that S30V is a good steel, but XHP is exotic. These folks are probably a good reason why Spyderco doesn't post their HRC info as discussed in another thread.

/r/knifeclub is a far better subreddit than /r/knives, but even they get carried away sometimes. A couple people on there really love XHP and have consistently claimed it's far better than S30V, people read it and repeated it as fact, rinse wash and repeat.

The reality of the matter is that most people wouldn't be able to tell a difference between unmarked blades. That said, Spyderco did make a mistake here, I wouldn't be happy expecting one steel and receiving another. I'm glad they're making it right, as always.

Ah, I didn't know they were both close together, Moki & Seki City. I think it's like industrial "burbs" of Nagoya, where there are a lot of production factories.
There are also probably a LOT of "Seki Cities" I would think, pretty sure it means like Gate City or something...
I've lived in Osaka and Hikone years ago, so been over that direction of Nagoya quite a few times... good food.

Mistakes happen, people are human and panic ensues. Reddit is a great place to share and discuss, if you can see past many of the glaring truckloads of misinformation, inconsistency, lack of evidence and citation. It reminds of the old Napster in its hay day, minus the cool music and good discussion..

Sounds like it could turn out to be a collectors item for hardcore fans and I appreciate Spyderco for their transparency.

God knows if there was a single mistaken run of the PM2 in black G10 and CTS-BD1 sold for $110 retail, servers would be overloaded on every major online knife store, Reddit threads would hail the steel as exotic and groundbreaking, and they'd be for sale on the secondary market for $400.

I've tried to follow along on reddit, but the site layout makes me want to stab myself in the eye with a fork. It looks like a fourth grader designed it.

My buddies will send me "Hey check this out..." forwards with links to reddit and I'll need them to explain what the hell I'm even looking at.

Interesting. Glad its staying as XHP. Although I'm sure those s30v will become a rare collector piece ;)

From the February 2015 Spyderco Byte released today:

"C158TIP TECHNO FOLDER FEATURES A TEMPORARY BLADE STEEL CHANGE

Have you always wanted a postage stamp printed upside down? Here’s your opportunity.

The C158TIP Techno is Spyderco / Marcin Slysz collaboration. When released, the blade steel for the model was Carpenter Steel’s CTS® XHP.

“Pobody’s Nerfect” - we goofed!

A single production run released this month has a Crucible CPM® S30V blade steel. Carpenter CTS XHP and Crucible CPM S30V are both steels produced here in the United States with the highest rating for cutting performance, edge retention and rust resistance. Once the run of “Oops Technos” are gone the model will return this autumn back to its original CTS XHP blade steel. The CPM S30V Techno is shipping now with no change in pricing from the CTS XHP version. MSRP: $319.95"

Glad I finally came across this, I had always wondered why I ended up with an S30V version instead of XHP. All the reviews and specs showed XHP, but I noticed that the BHQ listing stated S30V, but their picture shows an XHP blade. It sort of ticked me off at first, but I love the knife and know the differences in the steel are negligible. Knowing this was a mistake now has me set with delusions of collect-ability grandure. What began as a simple mistake, will now fund my retirement! (continues to dream of the CRKT Kit Carson series skyrocketing in value, and lock stick becoming a desirable feature...)
