Techno vs Sage 2

I am feeling the need for a new Spyderco. I am torn between the Techno and Sage 2. Very similar and similar price point. What am I missing? What are the pros and cons of each for general EDC? What do you like about yours?

sage 2 :) the techno is neat but its too bulky for its size for me. similar to the BM MPR 755. both i enjoyed but i just couldnt keep them in my pockets :/

but a techno did call to me more personally. i bought it, tried it, then traded it.

doesnt matter what you buy 1st, im sure you will eventually get both :p have fun!

Two great titanium frame-locks from the Taichung factory. Sage 2 is longer by about half an inch closed and blade length with thinner blade and better for cutting. Techno is a great change pocket knife with a robust blade that's quite a bit thicker and CTS-XHP vs. S30V. Techno is about $20 more. They weigh about the same. Personal choice dictates. Both excellent folders with great fit and finish. I use Techno more and have a backup.

The Techno is cooler and cuter, but the Sage 2 is probably a better knife from a usability standpoint (larger handle, thinner blade stock). I still prefer the Techno since it is considered cute by most people and I'm giving up very little edge to the Sage so I carry it when a larger knife like a PM2 or Military will raise too many eyebrows. It still cuts great even thought the blade is thicker and I feel better abusing it than I do the Sage ;)

Cute little brute:

Thanks for the replies. I have heard that the Sage allows a better grip, whereas the Techno is defiantly a 3 finger hold. I have fairly large hands and like most of us, do not a LBS to handle. I wonder if those with large hands still like the Techno?

I see both going for the same price. I was between the 2 as well. But I prefer ergos and blade shape over better steel. Sage 2 won out. I own the Sage 1 and it feels amazing. The Sage 2 will be here shortly. Just think in a couple years that I'd be happier with the Sage.

I own both and like both. The Techno is unique and has a "cool" factor about it, however in my opinion the Sage 2 is a better edc (more comfortable in hand and a better slicer). In regards to the Techno's comfort in hand, it is smaller, but I added a lanyard to it and it has substantially enhanced the grip. With that being said, I do have medium sized hands.

Great thread. I've debated these two also and would love to hear more. Subscribing (firewall at work blocks photos. :( )

The techno is my current EDC (along with a 34OT) and i really can't seem to keep it out of my pocket. I happen to prefer the XHP to S30v. I have med-large hands and don't have too much issue with the 3.5 finger grip. Both a great knives though and ultimately it's personal preference.

How does the techno do on EDC chores? I can see it being good at mail and boxes but not as good with food? The large hand medium hand factor is clear. Nobody on this forum has small hands btw

While I don't own a Techno, I have handled one and I do own and really like the Sage 2. I think the Sage presents a better all around knife. The Techno seems better as a smaller knife but is extremely chunky (that's a technical term).

If you're looking to incorporate food prep in to the knife's chore list the sage will beat it neatly by miles. The thickness of the techno with the flat grind make it less than ideal for the purpose. It'll do it but it'll take fancy cuts.

Don't own a Sage but love my Techno. It goes a lot of places with me and cuts just fine for regular tasks.

I have heard some voice concern about the naked titanium lock to blade interface and urge others to wait for a V2. Like the TI Military or the LionSteel witht he lock bar insert. I would want to hear from long time, heavy users before I make this a factor in spending 2 bills.

V2 for what, the Sage or Techno?

My understanding is both have a naked titanium to blade interface. Some have voiced concerns on Amazon reviews (re the Sage 2) that it might be advisable to wait until Spyderco upgrades the lock bar interface to a steel insert like the TI Military v2. Not sure I got all that right as I, by definition of this thread, do not own those knifes.

Feedback that would be solicited would include: I have had a Sage 2 for XX months and used for daily use and the lock bar has never moved. I do not see a reason for a steel insert upgrade.

Even the Sabenza 25 has moved to a non-titanium to blade interface with a ceramic ball as I understand it.

There is still a 5 star rating on Amazon, and the knife has glowing reviews everywhere. It's also not that new, so I'm not sure that holding out for a 2nd version will be feasible as I have the Spydie itch!

Is this the review: A caution about the Sage 2: the Ti framelock may wear over time due to the softness of the Ti compared to other handle material. For instance, in the Spyderco Military Ti, which has the same framelock as this Sage, Spyderco added on v.2.0 a steel liner to the Ti framelock due to wear and eventual play. Not seen in the Sage as of this writing.

Seems as though this guy was just speculating.

The Techno lock has miles to travel before any worry about late lock up. Can't see any movement with mine from use. Don't remember any complaints about the Sage 2 either, but I currently don't own any (gifted away 1 and sold 1). I prefer the Sage 1 to the 2 so I still have one of those.
I have large to x-large hands and the Techno works great (not the kind of knife one cuts with for hours anyway). Works ok with food, but the shorter blade is a handicap. For a larger blade I normally go with a Southard, PM2 or Military..

I've been carrying my Techno every day since August, 2012 & haven't been able to see a difference in the lock moving at all. In that time, I've used it for everything from food prep to cutting firehose & have yet to encounter a task it couldn't handle.
