Ted made it, and a fine job he did, too. I've had a couple of other guys come to my shop to make themselves knives, but Ted has by far been the one who took to it most naturally. He's had some experience with woodworking tools - high school shop, presumably though he didn't say.

But Ted has been special around the knife shop. He listened carefully to what I suggested, asked piercing questions, and bent right to work, doing just the right thing as if he was born to it. It's been gratifying.

This is Ted's design and he came up with a rational, practical knife. It was obvious when I saw his drawing that he'd given it a lot of thought; I didn't really have anything to add. We just got to work.

Ted worked carefully, applied patience that you might not expect from a young man, and without griping too much went back to higher grits when he needed to. ;) He's picky - he wanted his first knife to be perfect and it shows. I think this would be a fine 50th knife. It'll be fun to see what his 50th knife looks like, won't it? Ted designed and made the sheath too.

Have I made you wait long enough? Okay.

Good work Ted. We'll start on that dagger one of these days soon. ;)

Good on you Ted it looks great for your first go at knifemaking.
It looks a heck of a lot better than my first one. Keep at it i'm looking forward to seeing your dagger.

Man thats a great looking knife!!!! I bet hes tickled with it!!! Tell him to make some more, take care Dave,Charlie

Awesome knife and a great design. I like the pin placement too. It's obvious you have a talent for this (and a great teacher too!).

Looking forward to starting my first knife, and if it turns out anything as nice as this one I will be the happiest fat kid on the block!

Honestly, well done!

Hey that's a great attitude! Keep it up, be patient, think ahead and go slow. You'll make a nice knife. You've found a great place to get guidance too, there is none better. That's just my opinion of course. ;) Good Luck!

Hey that's a really nice first knife Ted!:thumbup:Good on ya Dave for givin him a lil' push:D
Great to see
Matt

I sent Ted a link to this thread, I hope he comes by to check it out. He's been on BF a while but I don't think he's taken full advantage of Shop Talk. Plus he's a little shy, so even if he does look in here he might not say anything. He told me his user name this morning but danged if my memory serves to dredge it up again. Sigh. Or I'd be tracking him down. :D

Ted, come and take your compliments man, you earned them!

I hang my head in shame when I see first knives like that. My first knife is an insult to anything with a cutting edge. I heard lawnmower blades laugh when they saw my first knife.
Ted has talent.

Man that is one incredible first knife. Way better than my first or 20th for that matter. You got talent dude.

Ted great knife clean functional lines with enough bling to make it look as good as it works.
My first knife was a disaster I had a guild member helping me and I still became a wizard I learnt how to turn steel into crap. Dave it looks like Ted has a tallent for it but a fair bit gose to the instructor to guide those tallents
well done the pair of you.
Ok so where is number 2

dont mean to bump the topic but thanks everybody for the compliments and thank you dave for everything. i really like how it turned out, flaws and all. now that its done i couldn't be happier, it has a lot of character. however dave did neglect to say that he gave extremely detailed and experience guided instructions, did probably half of the grinding, and corrected countless mistakes of mine. plus, i spent more of his shop hours making this thing than you can imagine...and did i mention he did it all free of charge? im really really looking forward to making a simple dagger, im hungry for more. ;)
