teflon tape cleaning.... loctite experience?

Women are natural communicators, spoken word is effective.

Here we read and digest information , I should have copied your original post as an example, yes it was ambiguous, and thank you for clarifying your statement.

Yup, although I think we get overly nit-picky at times. As for my original post, FlaMtnBkr did that for you anyway. :)

I had a plumber over at my house a while back and he explained to me why teflon tape gets used in household plumbing. Until then I thought it was used to create a waterproof seal between the pipe threads.

I know I get nit-picky, and yes the biggest pipe I've threaded was 4" and I don't think I could have connected it without plumbers tape!

Actually, pipe dope works better on pipe larger than 2", but that is just my opinion.

That, I don't know, and chances are you're right, I only used the 4" pipe segments to put up a satellite dish.

Not a critisism, just a suggestion from personal experience. I have actually taken an interest in this thread because the " side effect" of teflon tape is often misunderstood even among those who use it regularly. The one thing no one has mentioned as of yet is that no matter what your use, make sure the tape is wrapped clockwise, otherwise you will just unwrap it as you tighten down your fitting or screw depending on the application.

Has anyone else tried to use teflon tape as an emergency condom?

No?

Just me?

:D

Stiff wire brush removes teflon tape pretty well.
I prefer to use Red ( permanent ) Loctite. The key is to use very little. No problems so far with taking apart again and holds better than blue.

I think I may have read this at the wrong time...agree with the stiff wire brush to remove teflon tape, but it made me cringe after reading post 26.

I've found teflon tape sometimes helps hold a loose or sloppy thread, but thread sealing liquids will always be better in applications where the point is keeping the screw locked in place.

IIRC my first non-plumbing use for PTFE tape was in paintball. Velocity adjustment screws needed to stay put during a single game, but as the temperature changed throughout the day you'd have to make some adjustments. In that application there really is no LocTite that'll do the trick. Good old teflon tape was the shit, if you'll pardon my French.
