Tell me about Canal Street Cuttlery

I'm waiting on a half moon trapper jack as well...pen, coping, or a small wharnie would suit me just fine.

Those neon carbon fiber handles are incredible.

The responses in this thread have been so enlightening! Before I received my Half Moon from Justin, the only site I was aware of is Canal Street's regular site. There they only show a few patterns with maybe 2 handle covers - I'm guessing they are only showing what they are currently producing.

This all has really opened my eyes to Canal Street products. Now that I've found that "perfect" knife in my Half Moon, I really like learning what else is available in that pattern along with their other offerings.

I believe those that they're showing, Smooth Sunset Bone (2nd from right in my group pic), American Chestnut (first from left), and Amber Carved Stag Bone (not a HMT but I have a stockman with this) are "full" runs where I believe they made something like 400 HMTs per run (at least for SSB and AC). The other ones I have were usually 50 or less. They're older but there's a lot more of them out there. I believe they are also making the Kabar Dog's Head branded knives in rams horn and American chestnut.

Here's the one that started it for me. HMT with SSB

Thanks for the pic of the sunset smooth bone. The stock images I've seen don't do it justice compared to your shot. I can really see the depth of color now - just beautiful!

I just received a CS from JustinR and I really like this knife too. I love the easy pull. This one is jade micarta, but it is hard to tell from the pic.

CSC's Smooth Sunset Bone is just gorgeous! I really like their Barlow with the SSB and have been keeping my eye out for a deal on one.

When I received my SSB Moonpie trapper from Derrick a few months ago I was a bit miffed that it didn't look like the picture on his site. I thought it had a sloppy dye job. Fortunately I checked around and found that mine was correct before I embarrassed myself. :D . The fit, finish, sharpness, 5 pull, walk and talk are superb on this one, every bit as good as GEC but different. I'll need to pick up a half moon soon.

Only problem with this knife is it's too danged nice to carry. I just leave it in its little black velvet bag and take it out to show off to people. That's okay though since I am pocket-wearing/patina-ing a houndstooth and a #12 templar right now. I'll get them all broke in and then start on the other shiny new ones. I figure at one a month and the CS at the end of the list it'll be about 6 months  . To complete my assimilation and pay the bill for my recent binges into traditionals I'll be putting some high end Spydercos and ProTechs on the sales forum in a week or two.

I hear you on your transition to traditional cutlery GronK. That one looks like it'd take some nerve to carry, but I think it's very EDC worthy. They really like to give them a high polish it seems. A very attractive knife. I was reading a knife rag (maybe Knives Illustrated) and there was an article on Mooremaker knives, and in that article, they said some of Mooremaker's knives were contracted to CS among a plethora of other American companies. With that being said, I knew CS made the KA-BAR dogheads, and the ones I've inspected in person were very well done.

I got to nosing around and found the dealer (evidently not BF sponsor so won't name) with the complete line. I signed up for a newletter and got an offer this morning I couldn't refuse for a new Barlow, all stainless with carbon fiber covers. I'll post bics when it arrives!

I collect mostly bone or stag handled and I would rather see some color variation from parts of the bone due to density. I would be more concerned if the color is monotone with no variations leading me to suspect synthetic materials.

Also looking forward to the blue carbon fiber barlow...mine should be in the box this afternoon!

My personal experience with CS is only based on the two that I own. The above had to be sent back for 3 seperate issues. It seems like they really are in the hit or miss catagory, imo. I did get it back after returning it, but had to nag them a bit when it did not arrive by the time they has promised. But, they got it back in satifactory condition, and it is a very nice knife, though it fails to excite me (but that is just imo). Another CS I own is the sunset bone two blade trapper, and talk about ho hum bone scales... it definitely fits that, imo.... very ho hum. For me, the full verdict is still not in on CS, but will keep what I have. Whether or not I add more, remains to be seen. Maybe if I can get my paws and eyes to inspect first... then maybe I will buy another :-)

Can't complain on the buffalo horn scale fitting or blade centering on this specimen... very well done, indeed :-)

I'm with Stan. That buffalo horn Pinch is really classy!
Reminds me of something that may have come out of Italy in the 1960s.

Thanks, guys :-) The trapper is bladed with 440c, and the pinch lockback is bladed with the D2. Again, though neither one of them excite me, they do represent Canal Street in my collection.... and they are one of only a few US traditional knife makers that are avoiding the DoDo status ;-)

Midnight blue barlow landed this afternoon. Definitely impressed with it. I only wish they used a different shade of blue that popped a little more like the iguana and alligator.

Now if anybody at canal street is reading please give us a serpentine jack soon! A slightly larger schrade 233 would be perfect. Even a jack on the HMT frame would be sweet.
