Tell Me About This Customized 110

Hey guys, I bought this one off eBay, and curious to know more about it. It's my first Buck knife ever, so assume I know nothing about these knives. Apparently (according to the listing), the seller customized the knife himself, replacing the faux wood scales with nice Indian sambar stag on black liners, replacing the bolsters with brass ones, and file-working the backspring in a vine and thorn pattern. I assume the BOS treated 154CM blade is stock, as well as the gun blued finish on the blade, and the "Oxblood dyed" leather sheath, which seems to be a very quality leather sheath made in Mexico.

From the very little I know about 110s, there seem to be custom series and production series knives. Was this a custom series that was further customized?

I would love to hear you tell me anything about this knife, such as its history, what kind of run it comes from, how common it is, its value, etc. I'm guessing its "customizer" may also be someone known to you or a member here. Thanks!

...I assume the BOS treated 154CM blade is stock...

I'm no expert, but I have that "blued" CPM154 blade [154CM is different] in a Bass Pro special, with the wood scales. Brass bolsters are the Buck factory default, and are integral with the liners. The Sambar scales look good, although maybe a bit of glue showing at the ends???

Post the eBay URL, and one of the *real* experts here can tell you if you got ripped... :D

Edit: The Buck wood scales are real wood, impregnated with resin (IIRC)...and I like the brown Mexican leather sheaths, too - just don't wear it with a shirt/pants you really like...the stain bleeds rather easily... ;)

Honestly, I don't care that much if I overpaid, or who did the customizing, I'm more interested in the history of the knife, learning about Buck 110s in general, how common this type of 110 is, and what it might sell for on the forum. Thanks

I thought it looked like Don Seals filework. He does a pretty good job with these Bucks!
Is cleaninguy or Texas ringing any bells for you, 'Slinger? How about an April 11th end date?

Dave

I've never heard of Seals, but I don't get out much... :p

Considering the price Buck wants for Sambar right now, that's not a bad price you paid. I sold one similar for that a month or so ago. It is definitely a BP knife, lemme see if I can find a link at BP...I don't recall how much I paid for mine...

here it is at BP...

It's item 38-886-460-01...And from their price, you paid about $138 for the Sambar and filework, which required disassembly of the knife...

I'd say you did all right...

As far as history, well, Buck makes special runs for Bass Pro, Cabelas, Gander Mountain...Only available through their outlets...Someone [Seals?] stripped the wood scales off a BP special and installed the Sambar Stag...The CPM154 on Sambar is not common, AFAIK...Should make a good EDC...

That looks like a Don Seals special aka Cleaning Guy on the Bay.
It looks like the one he had one sale last week.

Yep, Trax is right I think. The CPM-154s are Bass Pro knives that come with laminated Rosewood. Maybe Don will chime in and verify. $138 was a good price IMO. The knife retails for $75 + s&h and the stag was around $50. That's not much margin unless Don made a great deal on his purchases.

Hi Balislinger,

Welcome to the Buck BF. That looks nice a bit more glue than I'd like to see as said above by the other fellows. That looks like it could be Arks work or maybe cleaningguys work. You should know that the custom work that was done to your BPS 110 voided the Buck forever warranty. Thanks for the very nice photo's

well i am not an expert by no means
i have had Art do some work for me and it was better fit then this.
so i would tentatively rule him out ..
the stag is nice it is some what matched
wish i could do so well as this
any after market scales or (as said) file work means
you can never send it to buck for any thing..they wont touch it..

as far as how many made for BP some how the number of around
1500 to 2000 in two diffrent runs comes to mind but most likely wrong
buck does not use that steel much now,
seems that some times they get some in ..but it is not always there

if you like the knife as a dally carry and not a hard use knife
most all after work is OK!
but for hard use .. you need to ask if he will replace a broke knife as buck wont
some will most wont..

for what its worth most "collectors" would likely avoid buying this..
for the most part i do my self
but non collectors that like nice stag and file work will buy one
would be nice if buck should offer this as options for customs
a likely sale price i cant offer as i dont track most non buck fancy's
what i see on the bay and some shows
is mostly around 125 or so..

...$138 was a good price IMO. The knife retails for $75 + s&h...

I didn't want to post the actual auction winning bid...but add the $138 + $75 and you'll be pretty close... :p

Again, with what Buck is charging for Sambar, even that is not a bad price... ;)

...In my not-too-informed opinion... :D

After a little thought (pretty much all I am capable of), I would have to agree with my esteemed sardine can sailor...Anything that weakens the backspring is, to my way of thinking, to be avoided...for an EDC, anyway...

Ah, I thought I saw that $138 was the paid price. Reread and see what you were saying Trax.

Don's vine work I nice. I've often thought I might send him knife for a little back spring work.

yea they packed us in there alright..
i did have my OWN rack and did not have to share
the mark 38 was cold and sucked the heat right out of ya!
only 4 places i could stand up straight..:thumbdn:
was ok tell you heard the charges going off..
well that price might have been a little high..

...well that price might have been a little high..

Well, let's look at Buck's Custom Shop...Sambar Stag scales w/an S30V (only premium steel they show) blade, brass bolsters, no serrations, no other stuff (like sheath) is $222.50...The Sambar option is $144 alone...

I'd say that auction was right in the ballpark... ;)

i knew it was not yours...
you do better then that!:thumbup:;):cool::D

Thanks Dave! You're quite a prince. If the OP has any problem with the knife,id be more than happy to take it back now or anytime.I have hundreds of these out there now,and i've never had a backspring break.

seals,
if i offended you, you have my apologies..:o
i made my comments as some praise for eric
who has done some work for me
i should have said only i liked his better ..
i had no intention of detracting from any ones work :foot:
i know what it is like to put your work out there and
hear candid comments on it..

i also said i wish i did so well as you..
i have tried and it did not work for me

that you will warrant your work is fantastic!
note.. i only said a broke knife, as in a tip broke..easy enough to do
and did not refer to the back spring as weak point...
