I did a search, but did not find much. I got ahold of a bunch of tungsten for TIG torches. What can I do with it? I was hoping to use a little for a scratch awl, but am wondering what else it would be good for. Any ideas? Thanks.:)

There was a thread talking about using tungsten as a great edge-finisher. Supposedly, it puts a razor edge on pretty quickly. I'll see if I can find the thread and post it here. How much is a bunch? I'd really like to try it out for myself. :)

I think what you are talking about for edge finishing is tungsten carbide. It has an extremely high Rockwell hardness. But all it really will do is burnish the edge. Much like a butchers steel. Tungsten rods for a tig are tungsten rod for the heat and carrying current. Neat stuff. But no where near as hard as micro grain carbide. I use one for pulling the solder puddle around the guard joint.

tungsten is used in tig torches because of its ability to take heat, not its hardness. You can get it needle sharp and run a arc off it and have it super heated all day and it will still be needle sharp. I have been around it for years in the company of some world class tinkerers and I don't know of anything neat made out of the tungsten itself.
