Tell me about your Chevy Suburban

Do any of you guys have Suburban experience?[/B]
A camping buddy of mine had an older model, and we all loved it. But he was paying for the gas! :p

I don't recall him every having much in the way of mechanical problems or maintenance issues. I've driving it lots of times and trips and its not hard at all to handle. Its a great trip taking, load hauling, trailer towing vehicle. Roomy and comfortable with lots of capacity to do just about anything a passanger vehicle can do. If you can live with the gas milage... go for it, but if you are a high milage driver its going eat you out of house and home.

Upside: You don't need to go to the DMV for a license plate.

Downside: You do have to go to the Post Office for a zip code!

Downside: Extra charge for installed cell phone because of the need for its own area code!

Serious Downside: if you park in a "Compact only" spot, I will ask building management to have you towed.

I'm not a raving environmentalist whacko, but I just get sick when I see a single person commuting in one of these things. So you like to go camping a few weekends each year? Rent it when you need it. I you need the space and hauling for work, fine. But, for most people, there is just no excuse to be driving around day-to-day in three tons at 10MPG.

I drive a full sized pickup every day back and forth to work. I probably get about the same gas mileage (or worse) than the OP's suburban. I live in the bay area, so there was a time when I would get questioned about it by co-workers about it. My response was two fold.

"I pay less in gas money then I would pay to have a new vehicle plus gas (the pickup is paid for) so there is no economic incentive to buy a new vehicle... Most days it is more than I need. But, when I need it, nothing else will do."

I have a couple of co-workers that liked to needle me about gas mileage and such. Each of then, in their own turn, needed to move something large and heavy (playscape from toysRus, some sort of trellis from Lowes). Of course neither of the items would fit in the econoboxes that they drive. After moving those things for the, I've not heard about my big ol' truck again.

Most of the time you don't need it. When you do, nothing else will suffice.

my parents have a '98 suburban and man its great for roadtrips...not as nice as the newer ones like you got there powernoodle, but my dad drove around 400 miles and only used a half a tank of gas(44 gallon tank)...thats pretty close to 20mpg, needless to say, we were pretty suprised by that...its not to most luxurious car but it gets the job done!
