A website refers to the U-Dig-It as the Cadillac of Trowels, hmmm, I must say the first time I noticed one was in one of "Sicily's" threads. He always has cool threads like Hollowdweller, Pitdog and Mac.

And the Silky Saws, there are two threads running right now, one waning a bit, but basically I am fishing around to get a Silky and a U-Dig-It as I feel both of them are very, very valuable items to have in a pack and they won't weigh much at all.

Your thoughts?

Yeah, I would want that folds as long as they are strong. I would be using it for basic camp chores that you would need a saw for. Shelter building, limbing fallen trees and the like. Nothing dramatic really, something that I can use to buzz through stuff when I don't feel like hacking on it with a hatchet, 'hawk or large knife.

I got the Super Accel 210 with both large and fine tooth blades. Sturdy aluminum frame and comfortable rubber overgrip. It is only a couple ounces heavier than the smaller Silkys but will handle larger pieces of wood. If I'm only cutting small branches, I can probably get by with my SAK Rucksack saw.

For the price the Fiskars sliding saw really is a good value if you need a small camp saw. the larger the wood the larger the saw blade you'll want IME. I posted about the 'U Dig It' trowel a while back in a thread. Have owned one since they came on the market. It's heavy and SS, and gets the job done, in as much as it is a trowel not a shovel. The Glock shovel with the saw blade in handle interests me, in that I would ditch the saw and use the shovel portion with a nice long branch inserted for a handle. Something you can't do with the U Dig It is work for any length of time like a shovel, it's too small. I have dug a latrine with it in the past and it is a chore due to the trowel's capacity.

I've had a Glock shovel for 15 years or so. It is fairly sturdy but way too heavy to backpack. OK for river rafting, horse packing, etc. With the slide-out handle extended, the length of the grip isn't that bad. Your idea of a shaft extension is one I haven't heard before. It would be interesting to see how much it improves the performance. One problem is that the opening for the saw accessory is not terribly wide so you'd have to taper the end of a thicker pole.

When I'm out in the woods, I'm not really excavating hasty fighting positions or foxholes these days, so a full bore E-tool isn't something I need. That said, it's a lot easier to dig a water ditch around the tent or even a cat hole with a decent Etool than it is with a trowel.

I don't know if I'd buy the hype about a "Cadillac" trowel, but some people like to hype up everything.

Well, the Silky needs no introduction here. Buy one, you'll love it. Too, I have the U-dig-it trowel. The trowel is bombproof and very well designed. In my case, a great investment.

Yeah, as long as it's an Escalade, right? :D

Thanks for the information guys, I greatly appreciate it. These are two pieces of gear that I am in dire need of really.

Don't know if its my favorite because it just arrived about 30 minutes ago, but the Super Accel 21 seems very well made and very sturdy. I was a bit surprised at how big it feels for its weight. I just used it to cut a 1 1/2 inch maple branch I keep around for my dog to chew on and it cut through it in seconds

Yes, the 21cm Super Accel is a lot of saw for the weight. I'm looking forward to trying it on a few larger branches, just to see where its upper limit is.

The look on a buddy's face when they first try it is, by itself, worth the price.

The look on my wife's face was pure amazement, not regarding the saw itself, but the fact that the long, rectangular box that arrived didn't contain a knife. :D

I would explain it as simply a "heavily serrated" folding knife!

No offense intended... but... I'm curious... why the need for a trowel? Does the sudden urge to plant flowers hit you while camping??? I think I could kick a hole with my boot faster than digging a hole with one of those. Toss the trowel... pack a beer with the saved weight. ;)

Now... the saw on the other hand... very cool and useful!

I carry a Silky Pocketboy and a U-Digit trowel in my pack. Great values. Yes, I can kick a hole as well, but a trowel is much nicer around these parts for a quick latrine, firepit and misc. holes for shelter setup. The trowel weighs very little.

I have both a Gomboy Silky Saw and a U Dig It shovel.
The Silky Saw is the best folding wood saw I've ever used.
They are well worth the money. It's like going from an imitation 'Rambo Knife'
to a Busse. I was so impressed with my Silky Saw last time I went camping (last weekend) that I barely even used my chopper. The U-Dig-It shovel is a good value.
It's strong and light. I've only had 2 compact shovels, the other was a plastic
orange shovel that was fine but not as sturdy (also didn't fold). I use the U-Dig-It
primarily for putting out camp fires.
