Tell me I'm wrong--wranglerstar!

Make a defense free of appeal to accomplishment or I smell logical fallacy. ;)

Agreed. Although I am on the side of thinking that he is more good than not, the fact that someone has a channel does not remove the right of others to comment. If someone puts their material out for public consumption, it is completely fair game for the public to comment.

I like Wranglerstar because he makes me feel like I can do things too. I'm not into the logging stuff... And I don't chop down a lot of trees. However, I do enjoy axes and old tools and such. I don't know that he has claimed to be an expert but he is sharing what works for him. Who cares if he cuts every tree the "correct" way? I think the Proper thing is funny and I don't think he means it as a serious statement. He quite often admits that hes not an expert or that he is self taught on certain things. The tree came down and no one was hurt.... What's the big deal?

the big deal is that falling a tree is potentially lethal to the faller and anyone in proximity. it is not something to ever take lightly. Many professional fallers are killed every year in North America and they know what they are doing. So a guy who does not take it seriously and demonstrates dangerous technique could inspire other dummies to go cut down a tree and thereby kill or maim themselves or others.

You got that right!

Most don't realize the weight of, and danger in felling a tree. Even a small tree can weigh a ton, a large one can weigh MANY tons!

Yeah, even though you can often push some of these trees off the hinge they are not going to budge once on the ground. And limbs slightly larger than dowel can possibly kill you or take your shoulder out.

Anybody seen the video of this guy almost killing himself in the top of a tree? He trys to play climer arborist and almost busts his rib cage in the process. If you want to meet real timber fallers, go to Arboristsite.

I have to say that I have skipped any falling episodes. I don't need to pickup any of his bad habits.
I will elaborate on my point made earlier. My sentiment should not be that murky. I'd propose enjoying Wranglerstar or if you are God's gift to homesteading I want to see your youtube channel or something more than the facade we all hide behind on this forum. Unlike the rest of us, Wranglerstar has put it all on the Internet. Talk is cheap. Film yourself so I can see your mastery.

More logical fallacy. Video or it isn't true.

I grew up with real homesteaders, rarely does that go hand in hand with posting online.

Another logical fallacy is that he puts it all online, unless he streams 24/7.

I don't take videos in part because I don't think I'm an authority on everything. I do fell, buck and limb trees at least as long as WS. I don't have a lot of "proper" axes, but my success and safety rate is pretty good using what I have. I have not hurt myself or anyone with me, ever beyond superficial scratches from limbs and the like, but there have been close calls which have made me even more careful over the years..

Bottom line, if he puts himself out there, I will praise or criticize him as I see fit. In the case of playing logger, the "just do it" message could get people killed. Hot and heavy lectures about BLO, fast food wrappers in work truck, whatever are fine, but people need to realize that he does not always know what he is doing and following his example is not safe. In the video I posted, he felled a tree without proper planning and with poor execution. It could have fallen on him except for luck. He should have stopped the video and explained how and why he was lucky to be alive, but he puts it out without comment and many will consider it a successful felling with an axe, especially if WS and his followers do not allow criticism.

You do not have to be an expert to rightfully critisize his approach to felling a tree. I don't make my living by homesteading but i have spent the last 35 years working on my 90 acre piece of mountainside. Everything i do is on sidehill, nothing is level, and that adds a complexity to every job or situation. Using a chainsaw i have brought down a number of trees over the years. But, for the big ones or those in a challenging location, i ask a good friend who is a professional logger, to do these ones for me.
So i am not an expert, but i have enough experience to know that there is potential danger even with small trees and there are so many variables specific to each situation that you can get hurt or have the tree go the wrong way and then it's too late.
I don't do cardiac surgery either.
