Tell me stories about canoeing

popedandy,

I like that poling photo. One of my friends made up a couple poles and got fairly good at using them upriver in a 16-17 ft canoe.

My brother and I went scouting on sunday to check out a small floatable stream. It looks promising. Found two points to put in and take out, eleven miles apart. Will make a nice one day float. Its in the boonies. Wouldnt be surprised to run into a banjo strummer. I have one problem that scares me. Im going to have to use a handheld GPS to avoid paddling past the takeout point. The road cannot be seen from the river. I dont know how to use the GPS that well.

Just got back sunday from a week on the Swan Lake canoe system in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. (http://kenai.fws.gov/)
Didn't bring my canoe's from ME when I moved here last year so borrowed a 16 foot Old Town Penobscot and had a blast.

dipbait,

It sounds like you are going to have to leave a vehicle at the take-out for a shuttle. I would walk down to the river and put some big ribbon streamers on a few branches at the takeout and just upstream from it.

When the Salt river is low, its been high for two years now, I canoe often. Mostly solo. Its one of my favorite things to do. I fish and catch lots of them with a canoe . The craft mostly takes me to the fishing spots where I wade. A canoe is hard to control and fish at the same time. I often tether it to me . I have a plastic Old Town Guide , 14 foot. No keel. It bounces over rock bars better than aluminum and there is no keel to snag on rocks. Id rather canoe a small stream than motor on big waters. I see all kinds of wildlife. Heres a pic , tethered to me , fish in hand , knife on belt.:)

Got into some bass over on the lake this past week.

Day before yesterday, I was in the yak and two stinkpots (bass boats) pulled up.

It was oh-so-satisfying to catch two or three fish to their one. :p :D

There is an excellent website and Forum called Song Of The Paddle, which is for those interested in canoes and canoeing.

All interests such as kayaking, inflatables, folding, and my own preference, Packrafting, are welcome, here.

Reading the bloggs, and seeing the photographs were really what got me into paddling, its also led me to this Forum!
