tell me what you think (Sebenza tool Idea)

That's a neat idea, don't be astonished at the cost of the injection mold. I'd consider using a local machine shop accustomed to high precision parts fabrication.

Good luck!

Before you break the bank and spend your savings on a mold, I would suggest that you give some thought to:

Who would buy this?
What is the potential in numbers? (how many people could/ would buy this)
How much would they be willing to spend?
How do I market this? (forums, shows, through dealers)

How much does a tool cost? (mold- either hard tooled for life or aluminum(7075) for short runs)

Right now, if I were to guess, I think that you would spend many thousands on a mold (10K+) and may not be able to recover the cost of the mold itself. This is not to say something like this would not sell..Just some advise from a toolmaker who has sold on the forums. :)

On a side note, before you design something with a "logo" on it, get the permission/blessing from the owner of the logo.

Good luck, looks to be an interesting idea so far!

Thank you for you information, You have made some good points. the drawing with a Chris reeve logo was the first drawing in mind. I was not trying to use a pa-tend trade mark. I email Chris reeve with the idea about 6 months ago. I am not trying to get rich, I originally wanted to give Chris reeve the idea with some royalties of course and maybe a custom knife made. I am not going to give details on the email back. I would like to see this Idea get out only for the convenience of personal use. In my book, Chris Reeve knives are top notch quality, And give Chris Reeve my highest respect for the quality and innovation, along with the simplicity of his knives. He is the Dad of all frame-lock knives and I feel that all others are second best. I think that ideas come from what the consumer wants and that was what I was trying to give Chris from this consumer.

Are you handy with machinery ?? Lathe Work ??........I have a few hand made predator game calls that were hand turned on a small mini lathe, some from plastic. The quality is amazing. Any machinest will tell you you can get exact tolerances using a lathe and can turn out exact, precise parts over and over. A small lathe would only cost a couple hundred dollars compared to the 10's of thousands it would cost to have it molded.

http://www.pennstateind.com/ has everything you would probably need, maybe even including the material. Your basically turning a small "pen" like object. Pen turning is a hole industry, so I know you could turn out this small item with easily. Even the Hinderer and Strider tools are turned on a lathe. its definately something I would look into and consider !!!

In agreement with previous posters:
Delrin would be a good material to use.
The tool could be lathe turned manually.

The CNC set up costs would be minimal for such a simple turning provided the quantities are sufficient. I've had hundreds of parts fabricated over the years.

thank you guys for your help. I will look into machining them instead of having a mold made.
thanks
chris
